The troops had been stationed in the country since 1988.

After completing his schooling, he went to the United Kingdom, where he earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in engineering in structural engineering at the University of London.

Thereafter, he enrolled at the University of Leeds in the UK, where he pursued a PhD in civil engineering. After completing his formal education, he briefly worked in the private sector before becoming a politician in 2012. He has played a key role in designing important infrastructure in Maldives.

Career

Mohamed Muizzu’s political career started in 2012 after he joined the Adhaalath Party (AP). On 21 May 2012, Muizzu was appointed as the Minister of Housing and Environment, under the rule of President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik. In 2013, he joined the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA). He was re-appointed as the Minister of Housing and Environment in the same year after the Presidential elections. He gained recognition in the Maldives for executing projects led and funded by China. He played a vital role in the construction of the world-famous Sinamalé Bridge, which was completed in 2018. Additionally, he was instrumental in the ring road development project in Malé. Some other significant projects under his leadership included Rasfannu Beach, the King Salman Grand Mosque, and the remodelling of Sultan Park. He helped the Government of the Maldives in securing pacts and deals with world powers such as China, Saudi Arabia, India, the UK, and the US. Muizzu served as the head of the ministry till 17 November 2018.

In 2019, he left MDA and joined the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM). According to sources, he decided to quit MDA and join PPM to work closely with the then President of the Maldives, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

He was later appointed as the vice-president of PPM and was given charge of the Elections Department. In 2021, Muizzu contested the Malé Mayoral elections on PPM’s ticket. In the elections, he secured a total of 9,548 votes and secured a victory over his nearest MDP rival Anas Abdul Sattar by a margin of 3,791 votes. The MDP was known to have a stronghold in the city of Malé; it was in power in the city for eleven years.

In 2023, the Progressive Alliance Coalition, comprising of the PPM and the People’s National Congress (PNC), decided to give a ticket to Muizzu for the Presidential elections. Hussain Mohamed Latheef, a Member of the Parliament (MP), was chosen as his running mate. In the first round of the face-off Presidential elections, Muizzu secured 46.06 percent of votes, while his nearest rival Ibrahim Mohamed Solih secured 39.05 percent of votes. However, none of them were declared winners as according to the election rules in the Maldives, a candidate has to secure a minimum of 50 per cent of the votes to be declared the winner. The second round of the elections was conducted in September 2023 in which Muizzu emerged victorious over Solih by securing 54.04 per cent of the votes. During the elections, Muizzu led the campaign “India Out” through which he conveyed his intent of removing the Indian soldiers deployed in the Maldives after coming to power. The sovereignty of the Maldives is most important. The people have decided and don’t want Indian troops to stay in the Maldives. Therefore, foreign soldiers cannot be here against our sentiments, against our will. So, I have to tell the [Indian] ambassador who is going to meet me that we will have a very good relationship with these values.”

Allegations of Forcing A Maid To Commit Suicide

In 2023, during the Presidential elections, the opposition parties accused Mohamed Muizzu of forcing his expat maid to commit suicide in 2012 while he was serving as the Minister of Housing and Infrastructure. They also claimed that the maid was driven to commit suicide as he frequently displayed ill intentions towards her. However, the allegations were denied by Muizzu’s wife who, in a rally. said that the opposition parties were spreading disinformation to tarnish Muizzu’s image. She further said that the police thoroughly investigated the issue and did not come up with such findings. She said,

Allegations of murder and rape. Even from looking at our society, there should be some consideration to the level of spreading fallacies. Taking this to such an extent is extremely saddening. It really is saddening when they spread such rumors to tarnish someone’s reputation.”
