Nongthombam Biren Singh, popularly known as N. Biren Singh, is an Indian politician, former footballer and former journalist. On 15 March 2017, he was elected as the twelfth Chief Minister of Manipur. On 11 March 2022, he resigned as the Chief Minister of Manipur.

N. Biren Singh was born on Sunday 1 January 1961 (age 61; as of 2022) at Luwangsanbam Mamang Leikai, Imphal, Manipur. His zodiac sign is Capricorn. His hometown is Heingang, Manipur. He received his Bachelor of Arts from DM College of Arts & Commerce, Imphal, Manipur in 1981. He also received a diploma in journalism. N. Career
as a football player
When Biren Singh was 18 years old, he started his career as a football player. He was recruited into the Border Security Force (BSF) and initially played for the BSF team in domestic football competitions. Later, he became the first player from Manipur to play outside the state. In 1981, he was part of the BSF football team that defeated Kolkata’s Mohun Bagan to lift the Durand Trophy. He left the team in 1982 but continued to play for the Manipur state team till 1992.

Although he had no formal training in journalism, Biren founded the vernacular newspaper Naharolgi Thoudang in 1992. He worked as a newspaper editor until 2001. In 2000, Biren Singh was arrested on charges of sedition for allowing the publication of a speech to all activists who were activists.

In 2002, Biren began his political career by joining the Regional Democratic Revolutionary People’s Party (DRPP). In the same year, he was elected to the Manipur Legislative Assembly from Heingan constituency. A year later, he was first appointed as Vigilance Minister in the Manipur state government and later became Minister of Irrigation and Flood Control and Youth Affairs and Sports. The Democratic Revolutionary People’s Party (DRPP) merged with the Indian National Congress (INC) before the 2007 assembly elections. In 2007, he contested the Legislative Assembly elections from Heingang constituency on an Indian National Congress ticket and retained the seat. In 2012, Biren retained his Legislative Assembly seat for a third consecutive term. However, he was dropped from the cabinet in 2012, leading to a deterioration in his relations with the then Chief Minister of Manipur, Okram Ibobi Singh. During that time he was the Vice President of the then Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee. In September 2015, when the BJP passed a bill in the Manipur Legislative Assembly to protect indigenous people, it said the bill would not harm any community in the state. Due to bad relations with Okram Ibobi Singh, he resigned from the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee and the Manipur Legislative Assembly in October 2016. Singh subsequently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and became the spokesperson and co-convener of the BJP Manipur Pradesh Election Management Committee. In 2017, he contested and won the Manipur Legislative Assembly elections from Heingan Assembly Constituency on a BJP ticket.
On 15 March 2017, Biren Singh was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Manipur, the Governor was presented with a majority of MLAs. He became the first Chief Minister of Bharatiya Janata Party in Manipur.
As the Chief Minister of Manipur, Biren Singh laid the foundation stone for the new academic building of Manipur Public School in January 2018. The project included new classrooms, principal’s room, common rooms, library, laboratories, toilets and separate hostels for boys and girls and was implemented by the Manipur Minorities and OBC Economic Development Society (MOBEDS). The Union Ministry of Minority Affairs estimated the cost of the project at 100 GEL. 10.80 million.
In April 2018, Biren launched the first state-level ginger festival at Parbung in Ferzaul district. The festival was a step towards promoting agriculture in the district, which is one of the most backward in the state. The festival received positive reviews from farmers who reported that since 2018 they have been able to sell their organic produce (ginger) throughout the year.
Under his leadership, Manipur became the second state in India to declare itself free of the coronavirus during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic in India. In 2020, there were only two patients in Manipur who tested positive for the virus and successfully recovered.
In June 2020, 9 MLAs who supported his government in Manipur accused him of lack of action during the Covid-19 pandemic and withdrew support from his government. During the trust vote, he was among the eight MPs from Manipur who skipped the Legislative Assembly proceedings and did not face the party whip for the trust vote. Later, all the members resigned from the Indian National Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
In 2022, he participated in the Legislative Assembly elections from Heingan district. He defeated Congress candidate P Sharatchandra by 18,271 votes to become MLA (on BJP ticket) from Heingan constituency for the second time.
On 11 March 2022, he resigned as the Chief Minister of Manipur at the Raj Bhavan to the Governor of Manipur.
On 21 March 2022, he was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Manipur for the second consecutive term.

In July 2020, Additional Superintendent of Police Tunaojam Brinda accused Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh of allegedly pressuring the Narcotics and Border Bureau to drop a case against a person accused in a drug seizure raid that took place in June 2018. Brinhal appealed to the High Court.
Controversial image
In February 2021, Biren Singh tweeted that “history was being made” in Manipur as all communities and tribes came together to fight drugs and poppy plantations in the state. However, what caught people’s attention was the picture he shared, in which he was seen entering the institution with his hands folded as schoolchildren stood on either side, kneeling and heads touching the ground. He captioned the picture as
I am really proud to see the culture and custom of Manipur. What a discipline.”

The controversial law AFSPA
In January 2022, N. Biren Singh made headlines after the controversial Armed Forces (Special) Powers Act (AFSPA) was enforced in Manipur. The AFSPA gives enormous powers to the country’s military to operate freely in an area that has been declared a ‘no-go zone’. After enforcing the law in Manipur, N. Biren Singh said that he was very much against the law but had to welcome it because of national security. Speaking to an Indian media house, he said:
I myself am against AFSPA. But as a responsible head of state, I must also see to national security.
