2014 Lok Sabha Elections
In 2014, Bhagwant Mani joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). During the 2014 Indian general elections in Punjab, Bhagwant Mani contested from Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency in Punjab on an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ticket. Inderpreet actively participated in her husband’s political journey and gave speeches in favor of AAP in Sangrir villages to help him win.

Filing for divorce in 2015
In March 2015, Inderpreet Kaur and Bhagwant Mann filed for divorce in the SAS Nagar court. The application was filed under Section 13-B of the Hindu Marriage Act for a decree of divorce by mutual consent. Accordingly, the couple began to live separately. After the split, the children lived with their mother, Inderpreet, in Auburn, Washington, while Mani juggled his time between Delhi and Mohali in India. Later, she publicly stated that her divorce case was not personal and that she chose Punjab over her family. Known for using poetry in his political campaigns, Mann posted a poem on his Facebook account to express his feelings about the divorce, saying:
Jo latkeya si chiran ton o hal ho gaya, court ch eh faisla kal ho gaya, ek pasai parivar, duje pasai si parivar, chief tan yaro punjab de wal ho gaya.
(The long pending issue is settled. The court decided yesterday. I had to choose between one family and the other. I decided to go with Punjab)
The news of Inderpreet Kaur and Bhagwant Mann’s divorce left many in awe as they were seen as a happily married couple in public.

2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly Elections
Inderpreet Kaur grabbed media attention when Bhagwant Mani became AAP’s chief ministerial candidate for the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections on 18 January 2022. In February 2022, a complaint was filed with the Punjab Chief Electoral Officer against Bhagwant Mani by a resident of Nabha, Patiala named Harkirat Singh Sakral, who alleged that Mani had concealed his marital status in his election affidavit. Apparently, the sacrilege accused Mani of making an “inappropriate” entry in the spouse column on the grounds that Mani was not legally divorced. Sakral also revealed that he discovered that Inderpreet and Mani did not appear for the second divorce petition after filing for divorce in 2015. According to the information obtained by Sakral, no decision on divorce was made. Speaking to the media, Dhuri Returning Officer Ismit Vijay Singh said that he had not received any complaint against Mani. he also said
It is not the prerogative of the Returning Officer to check the marital status of the candidate unless the candidate has a serious criminal record.”
Contrary to Sakral’s claim, Bhagwant Mani’s 17th Lok Sabha members’ bio-profile states that Mani’s marital status is “divorced”.
