However, Manmohan and his wife Gursharan wanted their daughters to grow up in India with Indian values. So they returned to India. She did her primary education at Presentation Convent High School and later attended the Convent of Jesus and Mary in New Delhi. Speaking about his childhood in an interview, he said:

I grew up in Delhi and had a fairly sheltered, protected childhood. Life consisted of school and home. I went to a women’s school, a nunnery, where there was strict discipline. It was an unspoken rule that one had to perform well, so I studied pretty hard. I had two sisters at home for company. We lived in a government bungalow in a sparsely populated area, so we generally lacked friends. This meant we had a lot of time on our hands. My interests were reading, gardening and watching nature.’

Daman grew up with two sisters and all three were voracious readers, something their father instilled in them. In an interview, he recalled his childhood memories and said:

Our most interesting outing was when Dad took us to a bookstore. Our birthday presents were always books. There was a time when we lived within walking distance of the Delhi Gymkhana Club, which has an excellent library. “I remember fighting with my sisters about library cards, borrowing two books, rushing home and racing to finish them so I could borrow the next two.”

He worked in rural development for 20 years before becoming a full-time author. While attending IRMA Gujarat, he did fieldwork in Bikaner district of Rajasthan. Later he started working in rural development and traveled extensively in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar (now Jharkhand) and less extensively in West Bengal, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. He was associated with a non-governmental organization for the promotion of deserts. Speaking in an interview about his extensive experience in various rural villages in India, he said:

I traveled a lot, even with bullock carts. It gave me exposure to people. By the way, I have traveled in united Bihar – especially the region that is now Jharkhand. I came to Patna for the first time, but the rural background I found in Jharkhand is available in my books.”

Later he moved to Mizoram. In 1996, he published his first book, The Last Frontier: People and Forests in Mizoram. The book traces the environmental history of Mizoram from the nineteenth century through colonial rule and the post-independence period, while exploring the relationship between people and their environment.

Facts/Trivia

  • A fan of the pre-cell phone era, Deman Singh has been without a cell phone for a long time and believes it has kept him sane. In an interview he said,

I am very lucky to have a husband who has a steady job. I told him a few years ago, now you earn and feed us. I’m going to follow my dreams. I quit my busy career. I don’t have a mobile phone. I think it makes me sane… when I see other people with cell phones, I wonder, oh my god, how do they live! I just couldn’t. I live in my world, I see what I want to see. If I were in another life, of course my son would have to contact me. But now I can happily work without it. My life is so simple that I manage pretty well without a cell phone. I find other people’s lives difficult, and I’ve simplified my life a lot… In many ways, I’ve given up on a complicated life.”

  • An excerpt from Daman’s book Strictly Personal: Manmohan and Gursharan (2014) reveals that Manmohan Singh’s family home in Delhi’s Ashok Vihar was attacked by a mob during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Killed on 31 October 1984 by his Sikh bodyguards for authorizing Operation Blue Star at the Golden Temple in Amritsar earlier that year. Manmohan Singh’s eldest daughter Upinder Singh and her husband Vijay Tankha were living in the household at the time. When the mob came close to burning down their family home, Vijay Tankha tricked them into believing that the house belonged to him. As he was a Hindu, the mob spared the house. The family eventually sold the house in 1986 because several houses in the area still bore signs of disturbance.
  • When his elder sister, Appinder, chose to study history, Manmohan was not particularly happy with her decision. In his book, Daman revealed that Manmohan had a low opinion of social science disciplines other than his own. Manmohan’s occasional careless remarks about the study of history hurt Upinder. Therefore, Daman took up mathematics to please his father. However, when Daman moved to IRMA, his father was still displeased.
  • In an interview, he revealed that he joined IRMA Gujarat after breaking his leg while skiing, which ruled out the possibility of going to IIT Kanpur. She said,

I wanted to continue my studies in mathematics, but unfortunately I could not get a scholarship to study in the US or the UK. My other option was to go to IIT Kanpur (which had an impressive flying club). However, I broke my leg while skiing and was unable to attend the interview in Kanpur. So it was either Maths at Delhi University or IRMA.

  • Earlier he was a non-vegetarian and later became a vegetarian.
  • In April 2019, Bharti Jain, a journalist with The Times of India, tweeted serious allegations of fraud and the complicity of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying that her daughters Deman and Amrit were receiving salaries from Nalanda University (NU) while in the US. In a series of tweets, Bharti Jain leveled serious allegations of financial misconduct and nepotism against Nobel laureate Amartya Senator. The fact-checking website Alt News Desk later clarified that the statement was false.
