confrontations
Criticized for sharing his nocturnal porn habit with students
In 2015, Girish Bapat came under public scrutiny for indirectly admitting to viewing pornography for students at a convention in Pune. At the student congress, he said:
We also look at the video clips you watch on your mobiles at night. Don’t think we are old. We are still young at heart.”
Bapat’s statements caused a lot of embarrassment for the BJP in Maharashtra. A law student named Yogesh Kamte filed a police complaint against Bapat for his alleged “obscene” remark under Section 294 of the IPC in a public place, but the police dismissed the complaint. NCP leader Vandana Chavan slammed Bapat, describing his comment as “uncultured and irresponsible”, while NCP activists were seen staging a silent demonstration in front of Bapat’s house. Later, Bapat tried to play down the controversy in front of the media, saying:
It was a more light-hearted comment. It had no obscene connotation. However, I could have avoided it.”
Viral pictures with “unknown” lady
In 2016, a picture of Girish Bapat holding a female party worker was circulated on social media.
The picture was clicked by an unidentified person during a BJP rally in Wagholi, Pune. A number of netizens posted nasty comments on the viral image, insulting the woman’s character. Accordingly, the 34-year-old woman contacted the police and filed a case against an unidentified person who clicked her pictures with Bafat. In her statement to the police, the woman said Bapati was like a father figure to her and held her hand to lead her forward to introduce her to CM Devendra Fadnavis.
Row of Maple Shelters group
In 2016, a real estate group called Maple Group put up advertising banners in Pune featuring pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Devendra Fadnavis and Girish Bapat, giving the impression that it was a government-sponsored scheme under the Pradhan Mantri Avas Yojna (PMAY). The cleverly crafted ad also featured a disclaimer in which the group said, “This is an initiative of Maple Shelters under PMAY and not a government scheme.”
Following this, a fraud case was registered at the Shivajinagar police station against the Maple Group for fraudulent advertising by the firm. Amidst the controversy, a picture of Bapat and Agrawal together at a public event was circulated on social media, after which she was linked to Agrawal.
Bapat, however, denied any association with Agrawal and said he was not aware of his presence at the ceremony. According to sources, Agrawal fled on board the scooter when the police reached the venue.
A troll for an ignorant tweet
In 2019, Bapat committed a faux pas with his tweet congratulating DRDO scientists for shooting down a satellite “that was tracking India”. His tweet in Marathi reads,
India, using an anti-satellite missile, successfully shot down a live satellite 300 km from Earth into space that was monitoring India.
What actually happened was that DRDO shot down one of its own low-orbit satellites while testing a satellite missile. Bapat’s ignorant tweet went viral on the internet after which he deleted it.
Found guilty of restoring the license of a blacklisted fair price shop in Beed
In 2019, the Bombay High Court criticized Bapat for restoring the license of a blacklisted fair price shop owned by Vibhishan Mane in Bidhi, Maharashtra, which had been revoked by the District Supply Officer (DSO) in November 2015. In addition, Justice Guge noted that this was the third charge where he had not been charged before the court. Vibhishan Mane’s license was revoked by the DSO after a series of violations at his shop were reported by local villagers. In August 2017, Mane approached the Deputy Commissioner (Civil Supplies) to withdraw the DSO order, but he upheld the order. Bapat then reversed the cancellation of the license and the order of the Deputy Commissioner when Mane appealed to him for the same.
