Career

Entering politics

In March 2003, gangster Bindu Singh demanded a ransom of Rs 25 lakh from him and his father and threatened to kill him if they did not pay him. He also told them that he had killed a doctor in Kadam Kuan, Patna, who had not given him the ransom money. When Alok approached gangster-turned-politician Suraj Bhan Singh for help, Singh told him that he should enter politics to clean up the system, as such gangsters are protected by politicians. This idea inspired Ajay who was active in student politics and he entered politics in 2003.

Electoral politics

In 2003, he was rejected by a political party from his hometown, Chainpur, on the basis of caste. In the 2005 Bihar Assembly elections, he contested from the Chainpur Assembly seat on the ticket of Ram Vilas Paswan’s party, the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP); However, he finished fourth and received 9,683 votes. In the 2010 Bihar Assembly elections, he again contested from the Chainpur Assembly seat on the ticket of Mayawati’s party, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP); However, he came second and received 32,930 votes.

Association with JDU

After struggling to gain political power in various parties, he joined Nitish Kumar’s party, Janata Dal (United) (JDU) in 2012 and became its general secretary and official spokesperson. He became known for his oratorical skills as he often spoke about the party’s views in English and Hindi TV debates. His positions on various party views were not liked by many party leaders and he was criticized by various party factions. He resigned from the position of speaker on June 13, 2019 with a letter to the then president of the party. On 14 June 2022, he was expelled from JDU by the then party president Umesh Singh Kushwaha for anti-party activities.

Confrontation

Contrary to JDU’s stand

In November 2016, Ajay Alok was sacked as the JDU’s official spokesperson after demanding that the Narendra Modi-led NDA government release the video of the 2016 surgical strike. Later it was restored; However, in 2022, he was again removed from the post of official spokesperson because he spoke out against the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government and Indian Home Minister Amit Shah over Rohingya infiltration from Bangladesh.
