confrontations

Accused of land encroachment

In 2012, the Assistant Commissioner of Gulbarga canceled the purchase of 22 hectares of agricultural land by Kaneez Fatima in Gulbarga. Former minister SK Kantha filed the complaint alleging that the acquisition was illegal and violated the Karnataka Land Reforms Act, 1961. The act prohibited the acquisition of agricultural land by anyone other than agriculture. He also noted that the annual income of the buyer or his family or undivided family from non-agricultural activities should not exceed two lakhs during the five years preceding the year of purchase. In a report to the Assistant Commissioner, Gulbarga Tehsildar stated that Qamar ul Islam ran schools and owned commercial complexes, hence Fatima’s income was more than two lakhs per annum. The Assistant Commissioner set aside Fatima’s purchase of land, observing that the buyer had violated the provisions of the Karnataka Land Reforms Act, and directed the Tehsildar to take possession of the land and mention the Government of Karnataka as the owner of the land.
