Anup Kumar, popularly known as Captain Cool, was born on Sunday, 20 November 1983 (age 40; as of 2023) in Para, Gurgaon, Haryana, India. Anup’s zodiac sign is Scorpio. Pro Kabaddi League
U Mumbai
In the 2014 Pro Kabaddi League, he served as the captain of the U-Mumba team. Under his leadership, U Mumba won their first Pro Kabaddi title in 2015, finishing the season with an impressive 74 raid points. He continued to be a part of the U-Mumba team in 2016, even though most of the team underwent major changes. With help from Rakesh Kumar, they managed to finish fifth, although this was the first season in which U Mumba failed to make the finals. Anup Kumar was retained by U Mumba for the fifth consecutive season and in the 5th season he became the first player in the history of Pro Kabaddi to reach 400 raid points.
Jaipur Pink Panthers
In the sixth season, U Mumba decided to release Anup Kumar from the team. During the auctions, Anup Kumar was bought by the Abhishek Bachchan-owned franchise, Jaipur Pink Panthers, for INR 30 lakhs.
Pension
After a remarkable 15-year journey in the sport, he officially announced his retirement from Kabaddi on 19th December 2018.
Coaching
In the 7th season of Pro Kabaddi League, he held the position of coach of Puneri Paltan team.
International career
Anup Kumar made his international debut at the 2006 South Asian Games. During his career, he won gold medals in Kabaddi at the 2010 and 2014 Asian Games. Additionally, he won a gold medal at the 2016 South Asian Games. Anup Kumar’s leadership skills shone through when he captained the Indian national kabaddi team, leading them to a historic third win at the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup.

- In an interview, Anup’s elder sister Neelam revealed that their father did not like playing kabaddi fearing that he would not study. However, Anup still used to jump over the walls and leave the house to play sports. His father only allowed him to play sports if he won prizes and later received a sports quota because he was “mediocre” in his studies.
- Anup revealed that he passed the 10th board exam by cheating because he was never interested in studying.
- Anup Kumar possesses three basic skills: bonus, hand touch and toe touch. He earned the famous name “Bonus ka Badshah” because of his exceptional ability to collect bonus points. In addition, he is also known as “Captain Cool” for his outstanding leadership and sportsmanship on the field.
- Anup Kumar always had a dream to train youngsters to play Kabaddi and after his coaching career, he established a Kabaddi academy named “Future Fighters Academy” in his hometown Gurgaon, Haryana.
- To connect the two events, he chose to retire on his son’s birthday.
- He participated in Khel Mahakumbh 2017, an annual state-level sports festival held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
