Syeda Maimanat Mohsin was born on 19 September 1959 (age 64; as of 2023) in Lahore, Pakistan. He completed his schooling at the Convent of Jesus and Mary, Lahore. In 1980, he graduated from the University of Cambridge with the title of Bachelor of Laws. In 1984, he graduated from Cambridge University. In London he was called to the bar at Gray’s Inn (one of the judicial professional associations for lawyers and judges) to practice.

Journalist

He has been working as a publisher and editor at The Friday Times since 1989. From 2016 to 2017, he worked as a news anchor for the Pakistani news channel Geo TV. In 2018, he worked as a news anchor in Pakistani news channel, ARY News. He hosted a weekly talk show called Jugnu.

He participated independently in the 2018 elections from PP-184 Okara District Constituency and won the elections with 62506 votes. He became an independent member of the Punjab Provincial Assembly and his term ended on 14 January 2023. In March 2021, he joined the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) political party.

Abduction of her husband

In May 1999, Mohsin’s husband, Najam Sethi, was arrested without a warrant by the Punjab police. According to reports, eight armed officers stormed their home, tied Mohsin up and locked her in a room, and arrested her husband. She started protests and campaigned in The Friday Times for her husband’s release.

The US-based Committee to Protect Journalists and World Bank President James Wolfensohn also wrote to Nawaz Sharif to release Najam Sethi. In June 1999, Seth was released because there was no evidence to prove the charges of “condemning the establishment of the state and advocating the abrogation of its sovereignty” and “promoting enmity between different groups” by the government.

In June 2021, Mohsin was attacked by unknown gunmen in Juj Kalan, Punjab after his rally. It was reported that he was threatened with death for not attending this rally, but he attended it anyway. After attending the rally, his car was attacked, stoned and shot by a gunman; According to the FIR registered, he was safe and the main assailant was absconding after firing at Mohsin.
