Career

He first met Lalu Prasad Yadav in 1981 when Lalu was a member of the Lok Dal Party and joined the Lok Dal Party and later the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) after its inception in 1997. He contested Lok Sabha elections from Jehanabad seat in 1985; However, he did not win. In 1990, he contested the Bihar legislative elections from Belaganj seat and won seven consecutive terms from the same seat. He contested the 1998 Lok Sabha elections from Jeanabad constituency and won; However, when he fought again from the same place, he lost.

Tearing the women’s reservation bill in the Lok Sabha

On July 20, 1998, when he was a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Lok Sabha from Jehanabad constituency, he took a copy of the Women’s Reservation Bill from the then Law Minister M. Thambi Durai and Dakhia. Then he went to the speaker’s desk and threw copies of the bill into the air. This move permanently marred the Lok Sabha process and Yadav again failed to win the Lok Sabha elections. Speaking on Ambedkar Jayanti in April 2023, he said that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar appeared in his dream and told him to stop passing the bill, so he tore up the bill. She said,

Baba Saheb appeared in my dream and told me to stop tampering with the original constitution. I followed his orders and tore up a copy of the bill.”

Beating opponents

He was accused of beating political rivals on various occasions. In 1991, he beat Jai Kumar Palit, a former Congress MLA, when Palit was campaigning for Jitan Ram Manj, the former chief minister of Bihar and then the Congress candidate. In 2002, evidence emerged that he kidnapped Atul Prakash Sinha and held him hostage in his home for two days and beat him severely.

Revealing the identity of the rape victim

On June 14, 2018, a group of people raped a woman and her 15-year-old daughter near Sondiha village under the police station. On June 15, 2018, when a police team was taking the teenage victim to the hospital for a medical check-up, a group of RJD supporters led by Yadav stopped the vehicle and forced the victim to narrate his ordeal. Several of Yadav’s supporters took photographs of the victim and also recorded videos. The incident sparked public outrage and the police later registered a case against Yadav and others under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, 2012.

Remarks against Agniver’s scheme

In February 2023, he said something very controversial about the Agniver scheme implemented in the army. He said that after 8.5 years, when the current Indian Army personnel will retire, India will have an army of eunuchs (Hijron ki Fauj). He went on to say that the boys recruited under Agniver’s scheme would face marriage problems because no one wants to give their daughters to retired men. Later he demanded that the person who proposed Agniver’s scheme be hanged.

In May 2023, ahead of Pandit Dhirendra Shastri’s visit to Bihar, Yadav made a controversial statement saying that Shastri makes women and girls dance in the name of ghosts in his shows and questioned why the sisters and mothers of people supporting Pandit Shastri were not attending.
