Anubrata Mondal is an Indian politician and businessman. He made headlines in August 2022 after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested him in a multi-crore cattle smuggling case. He is also known as one of the closest associates of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Anubrata Mondal ran a small grocery store to support herself. Later he also worked as a fishmonger. His career as a politician began in the early 1990s when he joined the Indian National Congress (INC).

He met Mamata Banerjee in the 90s when she was serving as the president of the Bengal State Youth Congress. He left the INC in 1998 when Mamata Banerjee quit due to growing rifts between her and senior INC leaders. In the same year, Anubrata joined the All India Trinamool Congress (AITMC). In 2000, he was appointed as the president of Birbhum district TMC. According to Anubrata, he never took part in the elections because he did not want to be a minister. Speaking in an interview, he said:
I have never participated in general or assembly elections because I have never been greedy for ministry. I do not want. I am glad to work in the party as a loyalist.”
As a senior TMC leader, he successfully organized several state elections in which TMC won big. Its power has grown manifold since the TMC formed the government in West Bengal in 2011. Anubarat Mondal has also served as Chairman of West Bengal Rural Development Agency (WBSRDA) and Chairman of Tarapit Development Authority. In February 2022, he was inducted into the TMC National Working Committee.

In 1990, Anubrata Mondal founded Mayurakshi Cotton Mills in Birbhum, West Bengal. He was appointed as the director of the mill on April 9, 2013. According to the CBI, he also has more than 16 rice factories registered in his name in West Bengal. He also owns 2,500 shares in ANM Agrochem Foods.

Inclusion of violence during elections
Anubrata Mondal has often attracted controversy for committing violence in West Bengal, especially during elections. In 2013, during the panchayat election campaign in Birbhum district, Mondal made headlines after he openly threatened non-TMC candidates. During the rally, he asked TMC workers to burn houses of opposition candidates and attack police on election duty with crude bombs. He was also accused by INC and BJP candidates of asking his supporters to attack candidates trying to fill their nominations in the elections. Speaking about this, the then Birbhum district BJP president Dudkumar Mondal said,
Sujay Biswas and Biswajit Baidia of the BJP were taken out of the BDO office and severely beaten. They had serious head injuries. In Labhpur, our district Kashinath Mishra was beaten up and he was hospitalized with a head injury.
His remarks and actions were criticized by the opposition parties, who filed a complaint with the State Election Commission. Mamata later defended her and accused the media of trying to generate TRP by distorting her statement and ignoring her health condition, hypoxia. In 2014, he was accused of murdering Sagar Ghosh, who was the father of Hriday Ghosh, an independent candidate from Birbhum who contested the 2013 panchayat elections. Anubrata reportedly gave provocative speeches during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and the 2016 Bengal Assembly elections, after which he was monitored by the Election Commission of India (ECI). During the 2018 panchayat polls, a number of TMC candidates accused Mondal of instructing his supporters to block other candidates from filing their nominations. During the 2021 assembly elections in West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) filed a complaint against Anubrata after TMC workers beat up BJP worker Bapi Ankure. In its complaint, the BJP said that Bapi was killed by TMC workers at the behest of Anubrata as he wanted to create an “atmosphere of fear” in Bengal. Once a video was circulated on the Internet in which Anubrata threatened a senior police officer that there would be dire consequences for restricting him.

Anubrata Mondal’s name was also linked to the Bogtui massacre that took place in March 2022, in which eight people were burnt alive in the rivalry.
Allegations of money laundering and cattle smuggling
In 2020, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed an FIR against Anubrata Mondal, her bodyguard Saigal Hossain, Enamul Haque and a BSF commandant named Satish Kumar. In the FIR, the CBI said Anubrata was involved in cattle smuggling between 2015 and 2017 and earned crores of rupees from it. On 12 August 2022, the CBI arrested Anubrata after he failed to appear before the investigating team in Kolkata despite being summoned ten times. A CBI official said during an interview,
We arrested him for non-cooperation in the investigation of cattle smuggling case. We found Mondal’s direct involvement in the scam. We will interrogate him today and take necessary measures in accordance with the law.”
He was later produced before a court in Asansol, which remanded him to CBI custody and was later shifted to a correctional center in Asansol. In November 2022, the CBI filed another chargesheet against Anubrata Mondal for laundering the money she earned through lottery tickets by smuggling cattle into Bangladesh. Mondal tried to settle his cattle smuggling income by showing that he had won Rs 500 in the lottery. 1 crore from a Nagaland-based lottery company in December 2021. However, the CBI said Rs 10 lakh was deposited in Mondal’s account and Rs 51 lakh was deposited in two installments in his daughter Sukanya’s account in 2019, two years before 2021.
Mondal tried to regulate the proceeds of cattle smuggling through lottery prizes. “Investigations are ongoing to determine whether she and her daughter won lottery prizes more than once.”

In November 2022, a lottery ticket seller from Bolpur named Bappi Ganguly claimed that Anubrata Mondal did not win the 1 crore lottery ticket and that a young man named Sheikh Noor Ali was the real winner. During the questioning of Sheikh Noor Ali’s father, it was revealed that Mondal had bought a lottery ticket from Ali by promising to pay 83 GEL. Ali’s father said that initially 5-7 million rupees were deposited in his bank account, but after demanding the remaining amount, he received death threats. During an interview, talking about this, Bappi said:
The prize lottery was actually sold by Rahul Lottery Agency of Bolpur. Kalam Sheikh, a retailer, sold it to Noor Ali (a resident of a village near Bolpur). Anubrata Mondal bought a lottery ticket (from Nori) for 83 GEL. Noor Ali spoke the truth. He is not fooling anyone. The sale of the lottery ticket was brokered by Biswajyoti Banerjee (Trinamul councilor in Bolpur) and I personally checked whether the ticket was genuine as they had no experience in the lottery business.
In November 2022, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Anubrata Mondal in connection with the cattle smuggling case.

Teaching scandal
In 2022, Anubrata Mondal was accused of appointing her daughter, Sukanya Mondal, her brother and her close acquaintances as management teachers in primary schools without passing the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) while she was the chairman of the West Bengal Rural Development Authority. However, Anubrata denied the allegations against her and her daughter and said that she has all the evidence to prove that her daughter cleared the TET examination. Anubrata said in an interview,
He passed the exam and has a certificate. The court did not summon him [Sukanya]. He only asked him to submit his documents. “
