Career

When he was twelve, he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. During his graduation, he was part of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and served as the city president and state executive member of the organization. He was also the City Secretary, City President, Kerala National Secretary and Tamil Nadu in-charge for the organization. In 1994, he started working as a director of The Karimnagar Co-operative Urban Bank and worked there until 2003.

politics

In 1996, during the elections, he helped BJP leader LK Advani’s Surat Rath Yatra campaign for 35 days. From 2005 to 2019, he was the municipal corporator of Karimnagar. In 2014, he contested the state assembly elections as a BJP candidate but failed to win a seat. In 2018, he contested the state assembly elections as a BJP candidate but failed to win a seat. On 23 May 2019, he was elected as a member of the Lok Sabha from Karimnagar constituency. On 11 March 2020, he was elected as the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Telangana.

On April 6, 2023, he was remanded in court till April 19 in the SSC paper leak case. After he was arrested by the police, a demonstration was held demanding his release. Some of his party workers also said that the police did not give clear reasons for his arrest. His party workers gathered around the police station and raised slogans against Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. Some of them also alleged that it was a conspiracy by the Telangana government to divert people’s attention from the BRS party’s failure in school and job exams. According to a police statement, the main culprit in the case was Shiv Ganesh, who circulated the newspaper on WhatsApp. Later, journalist Boora Prashant, who received the paper on WhatsApp, shared the news of the paper leak with various media outlets. According to the BJP, Chief Minister KCR and the BRS party tried to link the journalist to the BJP, but Sanjay was granted bail on the night of April 6, 2023 by the Hanamkonda court in Warangal district.

In January 2022, he and over 150 BJP members were sent to 14-day judicial custody for allegedly violating Covid-19 norms and assaulting a public servant during a ‘jagarana’ (night vigil) protest for teachers and other government employees. The protest was against the government’s rule GO3317, which announces a zonal system for job allocation and transfers. Their arrest was criticized by the leaders, including the national president J.P. Nada and Union Minister G Kishan Reddy. Sanjay was charged with violating provisions of the Disaster Management Act, Indian Penal Code Section 188 (disobeying a duly issued order by a public servant) and IPC Section 333 (willfully causing grievous hurt to a public servant in dereliction of duty).

  • His victory in 2019 came as a shock to many as he was not politically stable compared to his opponents. He became one of the four Bharatiya Janata Party MPs from Telangana.
  • In 2020, he criticized the film RRR and even threatened SS Rajamouli that his party workers would burn theaters screening the film. He was pitted against Qomram Bem’s character, who was shown wearing Muslim garb in the film. Later, Rajamouli said that the picture was based on the characters of Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju, but was not their biopic. However, when the song ‘Natu Natu’ from the film RRR won an Oscar in 2023, he took to Twitter to congratulate the makers of the film.

  • In November 2022, he was refused permission for the fifth leg of his ‘Praja Sangrama Yatra’ and a public meeting in Bhainsa town of Nirmal district, following which he filed a petition in the High Court. The police officers who stopped him said that the situation in the area was communally sensitive and hence he was stopped. The police also deployed several constables near his house in Karimnagar to ensure that he did not go on the yatra. He spoke about this issue on Twitter and said that he will apply to the court regarding the case.
