Accused of glorifying the practice of sati
In February 2023, he courted controversy when he spoke of Padmavati, the Queen of Mewar, while offering a vote of thanks for the President’s address in his speech. CP Joshi said,
Rani Padmavati Jinhone apne satitva ki raksha ke liye Alauddin Khilji ko kabhi chehra nahin dikhaya.” (Rani Padmavati who never showed her face to Alauddin Khilji to protect her chastity)
He also added,
He fell into the fire with his 16,000 female consorts. But your government has put obstacles around this place. Our government has now recognized this site. “
Consequently, members of the opposition accused him of glorifying the practice of sati, in which a widow immolates herself by jumping into her deceased husband’s funeral pyre. However, Joshi stated that he did not make any reference to the practice of ‘sati’ but mentioned that Padmavati had performed ‘jauhari’ (self-immolation) to protect her dignity. Refuting the allegations against him, he said he did not mention ‘sati’ and the word ‘satitva’ (purity) was mixed up due to poor translation from Hindi.
