Abu Asim Azmi was born on Monday 8 August 1955 (age 68 years as of 2023) in Manjer Patti, Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, India. His zodiac sign is Leo. After graduation, he went to Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree. He was accused of having connections with the underworld. On March 6, 1993, Abu Azmi was arrested by Bombay police authorities in connection with the Mumbai bomb blasts. He was jailed for a year before the Supreme Court of India declared him innocent of the charges. After that, Abu Azmi chose to enter politics.

Career

Abu Asim Azmi joined politics in 1995. During that year, he led the Samajwadi Party (SP) to two seats in the Maharashtra state assembly. In 2004, he contested his first general election and lost to Yogesh Patil of Shiv Sena from Bhiwandi constituency in Maharashtra. Azim served as Member of Parliament (MP) in the Rajya Sabha from the constituency of Uttar Pradesh from 2002 to 2008.

Abu Asim Azmi lost to Congress Party’s Guruda Kamat in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. In the same year, he won a seat in the Maharashtra Assembly and served for two terms. He contested the Maharashtra Assembly from two constituencies, Mankhurd-Shivaji Nagar and Bhiwandi (East) and won both. However, he could represent only one region as per the rules, so he decided to represent Mankhurd-Shivaji Nagar constituency. Azmi has the unique achievement of being the only MP from Maharashtra to win 2 seats simultaneously in a single election. He also won three consecutive terms in his Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar constituency from 2009 to 2024.

Rape victims should be punished

In 2013, Abu Azmi caused controversy when he said in a media interview that women who have sex with men before marriage, even if they consented, should be hanged. He made this statement when asked his opinion on Mulayam Singh’s comments on the rape case that happened that year. He also added in the same interview that rape victims should be punished. During an interview with the media, Azmi expressed his views on the Shakti Milli rape case and said whether the rape was consensual or non-consensual, it should be punished according to Islamic law. She said,

Any woman, married or unmarried, who goes with a man, with or without his consent, must be hanged. In Islam, rape is punishable by hanging. But nothing happens to women here, only to men. Even women are guilty. Girls complain when someone touches them and even when someone doesn’t touch them. Then it becomes a problem… if the rape is consensual or non-consensual, it should be punished as prescribed in Islam.”

In the same conversation, he added that the death sentence should be given to both the perpetrator and the victim. Abu Asim Azmi said:

I don’t know in what context he said that. But sometimes, the wrong people are put to death. Boys do it in josh (Hindi: excitement), but what can I say about it? The death sentence must be imposed. I will not speak against Islam.”

In 2021, Azmi caused controversy when he was recorded in a video saying that if a Muslim wants to rule India, he should move to Pakistan. he stated

This is a secular India where our leaders will be Hindus. A Muslim who wants to create his own leadership should go to Pakistan. “

Income tax evasion case

In April 2023, the Income Tax Authority summoned Abu Asim Azmi for questioning in connection with a tax evasion case involving over Rs.500 crore. 160 crores. Azmi’s involvement came after the Income Tax Department began probing the activities of the Varanasi-based Vinayak Group. This group has built various buildings including high rise residential towers, malls and commercial retail centers in Varanasi.

In July 2023, during the Maharashtra Assembly session, Abu Azmi raised the issue of riots in Sambajinagar district. However, his remark sparked controversy and led to the shutdown of the House by Speaker Rahul Narvekar. Abu Asim Azmi stated that he cannot chant Vande Mataram because it is against the teachings of his religion, Islam. He explained that not saying this does not mean that he is disrespecting the country. His remarks in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly created a major political controversy in Maharashtra. He expressed that his religious beliefs do not allow him to say “Vande Mataram”. She said,

Islam teaches us to bow before the one who created this whole world. According to my religion, if I can’t recite Vande Mataram, it doesn’t diminish my respect for my country and my patriotism, and no one should object to that.”
