Narayan Rana was an ITBP officer, Jaspal was surrounded by forces and weapons and he became interested in sports. His father was his first coach and Jaspal began training with rifles and pistols, but settled for his sport of pistol. At the age of 12, Jaspal made his national debut at the 31st National Shooting Championship held in Ahmedabad in 1988 and won a silver medal in the competition. In 1994, he made his international debut at the 46th World Shooting Championships, setting a record at an event held in Milan, Italy. confrontations

  • In 2019, Jaspal Rana found himself in the midst of controversy when a case was filed against the government over the Dronacharya awardee list for the 2019 ceremony. The plea was filed by advocate Rahul Mehra, representing the association, asking the court to ask the government to revise the list and add Jaspal Rana’s name to the list. Mehra was asked to withdraw the complaint as it was not filed by Jaspal Rana himself, who was in Rio de Janeiro at the time with the team for World Cup events. Mehra told the court that he would send a copy of Vakalatnaam to Jaspal Rana on Monday. He told the court that Jaspal had trained several award winning athletes like Manu Baker, Saurabh Chaudhary, Arjun Singh, Devanshi Rana etc.
  • In 2021, the Indian shooting team performed poorly in the 10m air pistol and mixed team events. National Rifle Association of India President Ranider Singh went on record and said that Jaspal Rana was a negative factor in the team. Indian Olympian Manu Bhaker also backed his claim and said that Jaspal Rana was the reason for his poor performance as he did not devote enough time to training. Jaspal responded to these allegations during an interview and said –

These sports in the country should stop manipulating and blaming others. NRAI can blame me. Everyone can blame me. But is that all that happened? Are they saying they have no role in India’s poor performance at the Olympics?

  • During the Tokyo Olympics qualifiers, Jaspal Rana suggested that Chinky Yadav should be sent to the 25m pistol events and Manu should focus on the 10m instead of competing in all events. Jaspal said –

Which shooter in the world competes in three different events? It was too much of a burden for Manu and if you add last year’s points, Chinki beat Manu in almost every event in the 25m sport pistol. Yes, I supported Chinki because, as a coach, I see merit. Chinky earned a spot on the Olympic team in the 25m sport pistol category, but we were let down. I can pretty much guarantee that if Manu had only competed in the 10m air pistol and 10m medley in Tokyo, he would have brought home a medal. An athlete must know where to focus and how to play to their strengths.

  • After a clash between the duo, Jaspal and Manu parted ways months before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Manu complained that Jaspal, as a coach, did not pay much attention to training. Things went too far when Jaspal Rana wore a T-shirt with a message on the back sent to him by Manu’s mother Sumedha. Jaspal Rana further added-

It’s sad that things like this happen to people after you’ve done so much for your sport. Yes, I wrote this message, but if this message came from Manu’s mother, she has no right to criticize the national coach. I had to bring them out so they would remember what they were doing. And remember, I never put anyone’s name on a message (on my shirt).”

He did not take painkillers because he was unaware of the doping test guidelines and policies, and despite the pain, he competed in the event and won his first international medal in the junior division. He also set the world junior record in the 25m pistol. In an interview after the event, Jaspal recounted the events of the previous day and said –

As a shooter, all my achievements are memorable because it’s been almost 16 years with wins and losses, many ups and downs, but the 1994 World Championships in Milan when I won gold with a world record (that’s special) because I was in the hospital the night before the competition because I had a boil on my knee and it was really bad. The doctors refused to discharge us and my coach Sunny Thomas decided to run away from there because I wanted to shoot. The next day we returned and performed the operation.”

Jaspal was delighted to receive the award, as were two of his students Manu Bhaker, while Saurabh Chaudhary also received the Arjuna Award in the same year. During the interview, Jaspal said –

What could be a prouder moment than that? This award does not belong to me, nor to an individual, but to the whole team that worked together with me, the federation and my students.”
