Political career

Salim started his political career as a Congress party worker and was responsible for organizing rallies, training camps and youth congresses. In 1982, he was elected as the student union leader of Seshadripuram College, Bangalore. In 1984, he became the Vice President of Bangalore City NSUI.

In 1987, he became the president of the Karnataka NSUI and in 1997 became the general secretary of the Indian Youth Congress. In 1997, he was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Council and served on various committees formed by the KLC. In 2002, he was again elected as a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council. In 2000, he became the Chief Whip of the Government of Karnataka Legislative Council. In 2012, he became the Director General of Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. On 25 January 2017, he was the Special Representative of the Government of Karnataka to the Union Government. On 21 June 2018, he was the Telangana State AICC Secretary. On 11 March 2020, he became the Working President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee. On 6 January 2022, he became a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council from Hubli-Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag district.

  • When he was the CEO of the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sanhattan in 2012, he built a national network for development at the rural and urban levels. In an interview, he said that if there were village youth clubs involved in nation building, India would develop. He came up with many innovative strategies as a youth leader to develop skills among Indian youth to become productive, responsible citizens of a modern, secular and technological India, leading to increased employment. He started organizing youth programs to unify the voice of youth clubs and mahila mandals. These programs have evolved into community-based organizations with vast networks. It also planned to increase the competence development, awareness, knowledge, dissemination and job orientation of the youth.

  • He was the first Muslim president of the Indian Youth Congress to hold the post of president since Muhammad Ali in 1963. In an interview, he talked about it and said:

    That was over 50 years ago! Muslims and minorities have always stood by the Congress. Even the party always favors them. This is the first time that a Muslim has become the incumbent president. Also, I was the first Muslim from Karnataka to be appointed as the President of NSUI of India.

  • In 2020, he questioned the state government on spending on PPE kits, disinfectants and masks during the Covid-19 crisis. According to him, Karnataka government has not released Rs. 2500 package to deal with the crisis.
  • In an interview, BJP leaders talked about Salim and said that eating halal meat was not good and that having leaders who do this in the party is a shame. In an interview, he spoke about the BJP’s attack and said:

    It will have no effect. Eating habits have been formed for a long time. In the case of halal, in Islam it is only the process of cleaning the meat. It is good for health, so they say it is halal. These issues are not a problem at all. This is actually creating problems for people living in rural areas who have poultry and livestock businesses… It will not affect the Congress party.”

  • In 2020, he was part of three working presidents’ committees of the Congress party in Karnataka. He spoke about this in an interview and said that it is not the first time that he has seen a committee of three presidents. In the interview, he further added that when he was in charge in Telangana, four presidents were working and five in Maharashtra. According to him, it is good to strengthen the organization and strengthen the powers of the president.
  • In 2022, he asked the Congress party for more tickets for candidates belonging to the community in the 2023 assembly elections. In an interview, he talked about it and said,

    We will check in detail and give the list to the party. Profit will be the criterion. Where there is a chance of winning, we will act to give the tickets to minorities. Voters are being taken to different houses and booths, such irregularities have been reported in Bidar, Vijayapura and Hubali, apart from Bengaluru.”
