Doddalahalli Kempegoda Shivakumar aka D.K. Shivakumar was born on Tuesday 15 May 1962 (age 61; as of 2023) in Kanakapura, a small village near Bengaluru in the state of Karnataka. His zodiac sign is Taurus. He studied at National Public School, Bengaluru till 8th standard, until he was expelled for failing in school. While studying at RC College, Bengaluru, he decided to enter the field of politics. He graduated from college and joined the youth wing of the Congress party, known as the Youth Congress, and served as the general secretary of the Karnataka State Youth Congress from 1983 to 1985. He completed his Master of Arts degree in Political Science from Karnataka State Open University, Mysore in 2006.

Career

D.K. Shivakumar began his political journey in the early 1980s as a student leader and gradually rose through the ranks of the Congress party. In 1989, at the age of 27, he won his first election representing Satanur constituency in Mysuru district as a member of the Congress party. He won again in 1994, 1999 and 2004 parliamentary elections, all from the same constituency. In the assembly elections held in 2008, 2013, 2018 and 2023, he was the winner from Kanakapuri district.

Saving the Maharashtra Congress government

Shivakumar’s leadership was highlighted in 2002 when Maharashtra Congress Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh moved against a no-confidence motion. Shivakumar gathered all the Congress legislators at a resort in Bengaluru for a week before taking them safely back to Mumbai, where Deshmukh won a vote of confidence.

A landslide victory in 2023

DK Shivakumar became emotional as the vote count results for the 2023 Karnataka Legislative Elections indicated a major victory for his party in Karnataka. He revealed that he had promised Sonia Gandhi, the leader of the Congress party, that he would defend his victory in Karnataka. He mentioned his assurances to Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge and also recalled that Sonia Gandhi visited him in jail. Speaking to journalists, he said that the office of the Congress is of great importance to them and he refers to it as their temple. He also added that further action will be decided by the Congress office. Of the 224 seats in the Karnataka Assembly, the Congress won 135 seats, the BJP 66 seats, the JD(S) 19 seats and 4 other independent candidates.

On 20 May 2023, he was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka.

Allegations of illegal mining

Shivakumar and his family have faced charges related to illegal mining, illegal transportation of granite and wrongful distribution of land. In 2015, the Karnataka High Court had issued notices to Shivakumar and his family members for their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities in Kanakapura and Ramanagaram districts of Karnataka. Besides, Shivakumar and his brother D.K. Suresh was accused of encroaching on 66 acres of land meant for the welfare of Dalits and economically disadvantaged people.

2017 income tax raids

On 2 August 2017, the Income Tax Department raided Shivakumar’s home and office in Bengaluru over suspected tax issues. They also searched Eagleton Golf Resort in Bidadi, owned by Shivakumar’s brother DK Suresh. The raids took place in several cities including New Delhi, Bengaluru, Mysuru, Chennai and Kanakapura. About 300 officials searched 67 locations for 80 hours. They seized Rs 8 crore from Shivakumar’s Delhi residence and Rs 2 crore from other places. The raids came after 44 members of the Gujarat Congress Party stayed at the resort after some lawmakers defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections. The raids ended on August 5 and reportedly recovered about Rs 300 crore in undisclosed proceeds. Shivakumar and his accomplices were granted anticipatory bail. He was arrested on September 3, 2019 on charges of tax evasion. He alleged that his arrest was politically motivated and a revenge move by the then Karnataka BJP government.
