Political career

He started his political career in 1995 by joining Shiv Sena. At first he was a party worker, and later he became the spokesperson of the youth wing of the party. In 2014, when he was denied a ticket for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he left the party in 2014. From 2014 to 2019, he was a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council nominated by the Governor. In 2014, after leaving the Shiv Sena, he joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and contested the Lok Sabha elections from Mavali constituency but failed to win. He lost to Srirang Appa Barn of Shiv Sena. In 2019, he quit NCP and joined BJP as MLA from Colaba constituency. On 3 July 2022, he was elected as the House Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. He won the election with 164 votes while Shiv Sena candidate Rajan Salvi got 107 votes. Rahul became the second youngest at 44 to be elected Speaker of any state in the country, while Shivraj Patil was the youngest at 42.
