Siddaramaiah is an Indian politician who is a member of the Indian National Congress (INC). He served as the 28th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 13 May 2013 to 17 May 2018, becoming the second person to hold the position for a full term.

C. Siddaramaiah was born on Thursday, August 12, 1948 (age 75; as of 2023) at Siddaramanahund in Varuna Hobli, Karnataka District t. Near Narasipura. However, according to school records, he was born on Sunday, August 3, 1947. His zodiac sign is Leo. Hailing from a poor rural family, Siddaramaiah helped his father in the farms as a child. Siddaramaiah did not receive any formal education until the age of 10. However, he attended folk art classes close to home, where he often practiced writing the alphabet with his figures on the sand by the village pool. Later, he enrolled in a local school in the 5th grade. Despite joining the school late, Siddaramaiah managed to crack the state board exam. At school, teachers often referred to him as S Cube. He attended Yuvaraja College, Mysore for a Bachelor of Science degree. After that he got his LL.B. from Sharada Vilas College of Law, Mysore (1972). He was a lawyer until 1978, and then he got involved in politics.

After Rakesh’s death, some of his friends announced on Facebook that they were traveling with Rakesh to Tomorrowland, the world’s largest electronic dance music festival held annually in Belgium. Siddaramaiah’s younger son Yathindra is a doctor and politician. While some sources claimed that Siddaramaiah was an atheist, others said that he followed Hinduism. In a 2016 interview, Siddaramaiah revealed that he was not an atheist, but strongly opposed to superstition. She said,

While Siddaramaiah was practicing as a lawyer, senior advocate and politician Nanjunda Swamy spotted him in a district court and asked him to contest the Legislative Assembly elections from Chamundeswari constituency on a Bharatiya Lokdal Party ticket in 1983. Later he associated himself with the Janata Party. He became the first president of the Kannada Kavalu Samiti; The committee was formed to oversee the implementation of Kannada as an official language. Two years later, during the by-elections, Siddaramaiah was re-elected from Chamundeshwari constituency.

He later served as Minister of Livestock and Veterinary Services. During the Ramakrishna Hegde government in Karnataka, Siddaramaiah was given various portfolios like horticulture, animal husbandry and transport at various stages. In 1989, Siddaramaiah contested the Legislative Assembly elections from Chamundeswari constituency on a Janata Dal ticket. However, he lost to the Indian National Congress’s M. with Rajasekara Murthy by 6409 votes. In 1992, Siddaramaiah was appointed General Secretary of Janata Dal. In 1994, he won the Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections from Chamundeswari constituency on a Janata Dal ticket. Later he was appointed as Finance Minister in the Deve Gowda Ministry.

During the 2013 Legislative Assembly elections, he contested from Varun constituency on an Indian National Congress (INC) ticket. He won the election from Kapu Siddalingaswamy from Karnataka Janata Paksha (KJP) by 29,641 votes. The INC won an absolute majority in the state by winning 122 out of 124 seats. Siddaramaiah was elected as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on 13 May 2013. He resigned on 15 May 2018, becoming the first Chief Minister of Karnataka to serve a 5-year term in 40 years and the second in the southern state’s history after Devaraj Ursi.

A gift of an expensive watch
In 2016, Siddaramaiah received a diamond studded Hublot watch worth Rs. 70 GEL as a gift from an unknown follower. Many political parties approached Siddaramaiah for flaunting expensive gifts, despite being a socialist, and also suggested that he declare the gifted watch as a state asset. Karnataka-based activist S Bhaskaran filed a complaint in the state Lokayukta on the matter, seeking prosecution of Siddaramaiah under the Prevention of Corruption Act for accepting expensive gifts and failing to appear before the relevant authorities.
Hindutva vs Hindu Remark
In February 2023, Siddaramaiah courted controversy for his controversial remark on Hindutva. Speaking to the media during the book launch event of former Congress MLA BR Patil’s biopic Kalaburag, Siddaramaiah said Hindutva was for murder, violence and discrimination. She said,
Hindutva is against the constitution. Hindutva and Hindu Dharma are different. I am not against Hindu religion. I am a Hindu but I am against Manuwad and Hindutva”.
He also said that no religion supported killing and violence but Hindutva and Manuwadi supported killing, violence and discrimination.
Corrupt Lingayat Chief Minister Note
In April 2023, during an interview on a Kannada news channel, when Siddaramaiah was asked to comment on the Bharatiya Janata Party vying for a Lingayat as the next Chief Minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah replied:
Already Lingayat is CM. He committed corruption and ruined the state.”
His comments did not go down well with the BJP, which accused Siddaramaiah of harming the public with his insensitive and hateful remarks. Later, clarifying the matter, Siddaramaiah said that he had not made the controversial remarks but that his statements had been misrepresented. She said,
I said that Basavaraj Bomai is corrupt. I did not call the whole society corrupt”.
He also noted that he has great respect for the community.
