He served as the President of Rajasthan Students Union from 1979 to 1980. He was the President of Congress Sevadal from 1988 to 1991. He served as the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Speaker from 1997 to 1999. He served as a member of the House Committee on Public Accounts from 209. From 23 March 1999 to 5 December 2003, he was the Deputy Chief Whip of the Government of Rajasthan Legislative Assembly.
Later he was a member of the Tourism and Culture Transport Committee. In May 2022, a 23-year-old girl from Delhi accused Mahesh’s son Rohit of raping her on the pretext of marriage. She alleged that Rohit raped her several times between January 8, 2021 and April 17, 2022. He said he met Rohit on Facebook in 2021 and their first meeting took place in Jaipur. They met again in Sawai Madhopur on 8 January 2021, where Rohit drugged her and took nude photos and videos. He said they later went to a hotel in Delhi where they registered as husband and wife. She alleged that Rohit drugged her, beat her, took obscene videos and threatened to upload them on social media. She also complained that Rohit promised her that he would marry her after divorcing her and when she got pregnant he forced her to have an abortion. An FIR has been registered at the Sadar Bazar Police Station, Delhi, under IPC sections 376 (rape), 328 (inflicting drugs by means of poison, etc., with intent to commit crime), 312 (causing miscarriage), 366 (kidnapping, abduction or coercion of 37 women) (57 marriage, etc.) criminal intimidation). Rohit reportedly went into hiding after the media broke the news. There were some rumors that Mahesh was helping his son; However, Mahesh denied the claim and said that his son was innocent and that he would help the police in any way possible.

The Rajasthan High Court granted police protection to the girl as she posed a threat to her life. Rohit Joshi was granted anticipatory bail by a local court on June 9, 2022. He was interrogated for three hours on June 10, 2022 at the Sadar Bazar police station in Delhi. On 11 June 2022, when the complainant was with her mother in Delhi’s Kalindi Kunj area, some miscreants threatened her to drop the case and threw a chemical substance resembling ink on her face. He was taken to AIIMS Delhi where he was admitted to the trauma centre.
Facilitating suicide
On April 17, 2023, Ramprasad Meena, a resident of Jaipur, committed suicide at the office of a transport company in Jaipur. Before committing suicide, he made a video in which he accused Mahesh Joshi and 6 others, namely Girdhar temple priest Devendra Sharma, Lalit Sharma, owner of Royal Sheraton Hotel Munji Tank, Deva Awasthi and Lalchand Devnani. He claimed in the video that these people were not allowed to build their house on their land near the Hanuman temple. He also asked Kirodi Lal Meena, Rajya Sabha member, to do justice to him and his family. Ramprasad’s son Ankit Meena said the father sent the video to his daughter knowing that the local police and administration would suppress the case after her death.
According to reports, Ramprasad also met Mahesh Joshi to help him get justice; However, Mahesh misbehaved with them. Ramprasad’s family staged a protest outside the office where he killed himself, while his brother lodged an FIR against the accused at the Subhash Chowk police station. Mahesh told the media that he met Ram Prasad’s family members on April 13, 2023; However, he did not offend them. She said,
I don’t want to interfere with the police investigation. I want the police to conduct a fair investigation. The victim’s family did not make a written complaint to me.”
