His family originates from the village of Khair Nagar, Tirwa, Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh. His hometown is Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Asi completed his 12th standard in 1988 from St. Francis College, Lucknow. He then studied at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi from 1988 to 1991 to pursue his Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.) degree. After that, he cleared the civil services exam and opted for the Indian Police Service. He joined the Indian Police Service in 1994 and later completed his Masters in Public Policy at the University of British Columbia, Canada (2014-2016). He excelled in extracurricular activities during his college days and was a part of his college’s Shakespeare Society (St. Stephen’s College, Delhi).

Asim Arun was inducted into the Indian Police Service on January 2, 1995. From 2002 to 2003, Arun worked as a civilian police officer with the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Kosovo. Subsequently, in 2004, he was appointed as the Head of the Close Protection Team that protected the then Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, as part of the Special Protection Team. He held this post until 2008. From May 2008 to August 2014, Arun led the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams. He also served as District Superintendent/Superintendent of Police in seven districts of India namely Tehri Garhwal, Balrampur, Hathras, Siddharthnagar, Aligarh, Gorakhpur and Agra. During his tenure as police chief, Asim worked on problems such as underdevelopment, extremism, crime, corruption, guerilla politics and communal riots. In August 2011, Asim led an anti-corruption campaign in Agra.

He also served as the chief of the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad for a period. During his tenure, he arrested many terrorists, espionage, Naxals and criminals. In March 2017, he led a police encounter in Lucknow in which an ISIS terrorist named Saifullah was killed. While serving as the Uttar Pradesh ATS chief, Asim initiated the de-radicalisation programme, a program aimed at peacefully weaning individuals and groups away from violent extremism.

Asim also served as Additional Director of Police (ADG) of Kanpur Nagar city for some time. To modernize the police control room in Uttar Pradesh, Asim introduced Sewa 100 in Aligarh (a transformation of the Indian police emergency number on the lines of 911). Later he expanded his service to Gorakhpur and Agra. Augmenting this system, modern police control rooms were subsequently set up at Kanpur Nagar, Prayagraj, Ghaziabad and Lucknow. In 2018, it created a Special Police Operations Team (SPOT) to work on high-risk operations at the state level. He also worked to set up a ‘Tourism Police’ in Agra to assist and manage tourists and maintain order in and around the monuments.

Arun also contributed to setting up the UP-112 emergency service. With a robust IT backbone and a fleet of 4,500 police response vehicles, the service has been instrumental in providing relief during the Covid-19 crisis. He headed the service from 2019 to 2021. His last posting was as Commissioner of Police, Kanpur Nagar; Arun became the first Police Commissioner of Kanpur Nagar Police Commissionerate in 2021. He resigned and tendered his voluntary resignation from the Indian Police Service on 14 January 2022 to enter politics. During the interview, Asim admitted that his decision to quit the Indian police service was unexpected. He also said that he wanted to join politics to better serve the nation and its people. She said,

I still had nine years of work left, but there were many things I could not do, so I decided to go into politics. It’s a tough road ahead, but I’ll stick with it.”

During the press conference, Asim said that he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party because he was impressed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the way he worked. She said,

BJP suggested me to join politics to contribute more for social work. I didn’t achieve much during my working life, so I decided to go into politics. I am also impressed by Prime Minister Modi who has set a new path for development. “

Further, he recalled that his experience with the BJP government was very different from what he had witnessed in previous dispensations. She said,

During the previous government, I received a call that some criminal who was arrested is trying to improve. Party workers used to come and sit in the police station. They gave a signal and repeatedly appealed to us to let the criminal go.”

The same year, the BJP announced Asim as its candidate for the Kannauj Sadar seat (reserved for Scheduled Castes) in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections.

He won the election by 6,090 votes, defeating three-time MLA from Kannauj Sadar constituency Anil Kumar Dohare of the Samajwadi Party. Soon after the results were announced, Asim took to his Instagram account to thank the public. he wrote

In January 2022, Asim Arun’s entry into the Bharatiya Janata Party following his voluntary retirement from the Indian Police Service sparked controversy.
