Upendra Kushwaha is an Indian politician and former Minister of State for Human Resources and Development (2014-2018). He is also a former Member of Parliament. He became a member of the Bihar Legislative Council in 2010. On 3 March 2013, he formed his party “Rashtriya Lok Samata Party”.

In 2000, he contested and won the Assembly elections from Jandha Assembly Constituency on a Janata Dal (United) ticket. In 2007, he was expelled from the Janata Dal (United) for “anti-party” activities. In February 2009, he founded his own party Rashtriya Samata Party. In November 2009, the Rashtriya Samata Party merged with the Janata Dal (United) by reconciling the relationship between Upendra Kushwaha and Nitish Kumar, the leader of the Janata Dal (United). In 2020, Kushwaha announced the formation of a third front in partnership with the Bahujan Samaj Party ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, contesting 243 seats against three other political fronts, namely the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the INC-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and one minor party.

During the formation of the RLSP, Kushwaha announced that the party would try to topple the National Democratic Alliance in Bihar; However, the Janata Dal (UK) left this alliance and the RLSP joined the National Democratic Alliance. In 2014, he contested and won the 16th Lok Sabha elections from Karakat constituency on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket. On 26 May 2014, Upendra Kushwaha was sworn in as a Minister of State at a swearing-in ceremony held in the presence of the then President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.

He was then appointed as a State Minister in the Ministry of Human Resources Development, and then served in the Ministry of Rural Development; Under the Ministry of Panchayat Raj and Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation. In December 2018, he resigned and left the National Democratic Alliance. In 2019, the RLSP defected from the NDA alliance. Kushwaha joined the Indian National Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Front, which included the Rashtriya Janata Dal, the Hindustani Awam Morcha and the Vikasshil Insaan Party. In 2019, he contested the 17th Lok Sabha elections from both Karakat and Ujiarpur constituencies on an Indian National Congress ticket. Verbal altercation with Nitish Kumar
In January 2023, Upendra Kushwaha accused Nitish Kumar of making derogatory comments against him when he was appointed as the chairman of the JD(U) Parliamentary Council, accusing him of ignoring his advice when he held the said post. While the verbal altercation between Upendra and Nitish was making headlines, several protesters pelted stones at Upendra Kushwaha’s car. According to reports, on January 30, 2023, after Kushwaha reached Arara from Buxarin Bihar, several people were standing near Upendra Kushwaha’s car with black flags. At that time, there was a scuffle between the protesters and Upendra’s supporters, as a result of which the protesters pelted stones at Kushwaha’s car. After that, Kushwaha Samaj workers beat up the protestors. He then took it to his social media and tweeted:

Speaking about the incident in an interview, Kushwaha said:
While some were pelted with stones, their faces were covered with mufflers, while others had their faces uncovered. I will tell you everything about these people at the right time.”
Thereafter, on 31 January 2023, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced his deputy and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav as his successor in the 2025 state elections, who urged Kushwaha to go against Nitish Kumar. In an interview on 31 January 2023, Upendra, who has been arguing with Nitish Kumar, snapped at him saying:
When I was appointed as the Chairman of the Parliament Council, they respected me a lot. But it was “Junjuna”. Even after being the chairman of the Parliament Council, I cannot name a member. They did not pay attention to my suggestions.”

After losing the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Kushwaha made a controversial statement warning the NDA leadership that if the election results go badly, there will be blood in the streets; However, after receiving a notification from the Election Commission, he clarified that his intention was not to provoke violence.

- During his school days, Upendra learned his political ropes from Jayaprakash Narayan and Karpuri Thakur, who were dear friends of Upendra’s father. Two-time Bihar Chief Minister Karpuri Thakur guided Upendra while he stayed with him at his residence.
- In 1985, when Upendra joined the youth wing of the Lok Dal, he was a junior to Nitish Kumar, a co-founder of the Janata Dal (United). Upendra was fascinated by Kumar and so, at his suggestion, he added Kushwaha to his name, as Kumar said the name would help his political status.
- Upendra left and returned to the Janata Dal (United) three times in 17 years.
