On September 23, 2019, Cambodia wrote a letter to BV Srinivas (President of the IYC) in which he announced his resignation as the National Secretary of the IYC and his decision to leave the party. Cambodia broke away from the INC, protesting the allotment of a party ticket for the Jalalabad constituency to Raminder Singh Aula, who hailed from the Guru Har Sahai Assembly constituency, instead of him being a resident of Jalalabad. Angered by this issue, Cambodia decided to participate in the battle of polls as an independent candidate. On 11 October 2019, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) President Sunil Jakhar said in a letter that Kamboja was expelled from the Congress for anti-party activities. It said Cambodia was contesting the 2019 Jalalabad Assembly by-election against the official Congress candidate, Raminder Singh Aula.

Hence, the seat was contested during the 2019 by-elections in Punjab. Jagdeep Kamboj contested as an independent from the Jalalabad Assembly constituency in the by-election after the Congress denied him a ticket. His election symbol was ‘man driving a tractor’ and his election slogan was ‘neta nahi beta’.
