confrontations

Derogatory remarks about women

Once, while giving an interview to a news channel, Patheria was asked if he could get more Congress MLAs by switching to the BJP, to which he allegedly replied:

You can’t trust your wife at this age, they are MPs anyway.”

The remark sparked controversy and was condemned by many.

Kill the PM come remark

On 13 December 2022, a video of Raja Patheria was released online in which he urged people to “kill” Prime Minister Narendra Modi to “save the Constitution”. In the video, while addressing Congress workers in Pawai tehsil of Panay district, Pateria was heard saying:

Modi will divide people on the basis of religion and Jaat (caste). The future of Dalits, Adivasis and other minorities is at stake. If you want to save the Constitution, be prepared to kill Modi with the understanding of its defeat.

The remark sparked a political row as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) attacked the Congress following which an FIR was registered against Patheria. He was then arrested from his residence in Hatta. Later, when trying to offer an explanation, he said:

My statement was misunderstood. I didn’t mean to literally kill the Prime Minister, but to defeat him in the elections. It was about the defeat of the government that supports the ideology of (Nathuram) Godse instead of Mahatma Gandhi.”

Condemning his remarks, the INC issued him a show-cause notice.
