Pashupati Kumar Paras is an Indian politician who is a member of the Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party. On 7 July 2021, he was appointed as the Minister of Food Processing Industries in the Government of India. He also held the post of Minister of Animal and Fisheries Resources in the Government of Bihar. Pashupati is the younger brother of Indian politician Ram Vilas Paswan.

Pashupati Kumar Paras was born on Saturday 12 July 1952 (age 71; as of 2023) in Shahrban, Bihar, India. His zodiac sign is Cancer. Career
Pashupati Kumar Paras began his political career in 1978 by contesting the Bihar Legislative Assembly from Alauli constituency (a seat previously represented by his brother Ram Vilas Paswan) and won on a Janata Party ticket. He represented the assembly segment seven times, first on Janata Dal tickets and then on his brother Ram Vilas Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party tickets.

In 2015, he contested the Bihar Legislative Assembly elections from Alauli constituency on a Lok Janshakti Party ticket. However, he lost the election to Chandan Kumar of Rashtriya Janata Dal by 24,470 votes. In 2017, he became a member of the Nitest cabinet after the chief minister defected to the NDA. At the time of his appointment as Minister of Animal and Fisheries Resources in the Government of Bihar, he was neither a member of the Legislative Assembly nor the Council. As a result, he was inducted into the Council of Ministers as a member of the Legislative Council (MLC) with the governor’s quota. He had previously served three times as a minister in the Bihar cabinet. He has also held the post of Bihar State President in the Lok Janshakti Party in the past.

In May 2019, Paras was elected to the 17th Lok Sabha from Hajipur constituency on a Lok Janshakti Party ticket. Meanwhile, Paras was a member of the Standing Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment, a member of the Committee on Government Assurances and a member of the Standing Committee on Defence. In June 2021, he assumed the role of National President of the Lok Janshakti Party, replacing Chirag Kumar Paswan. Later he also worked as a member of the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Railways.

On 7 July 2021, Pashupati Kumar Paras was sworn in as the Union Minister for Food Processing Industries after he was inducted as the leader of the Lok Janshakti Party in the Lok Sabha.

War of Succession
After the death of Ram Vilas Paswan in 2021, there was a rivalry between his son Chirag Paswan and his brother Pasupati Kumar Paras over Ram Vilas Paswan’s succession. Chirag, who had hoped to succeed his father Ram Vilas as the sole leader of the Paswan community, was disappointed when Paras replaced him as the leader of his father’s party, the Lok Janshakti Party. Apparently, after the death of Ram Vilas, five of the six party MLAs supported Pashupati. Chirag later claimed that his uncle’s election was illegal as Pashupati was elected as the leader of the Lok Janshakti Party by members who were suspended from the party. On several occasions, Paras presented himself as Ram Vilas’ political successor, claiming that Ram Vilas had handed over the Hajipur Lok Sabha constituency to him and not Chirag in the 2019 general elections. In a media interaction, clarifying why he considers himself as Ram Vilas Paswan’s successor, Paras said,
I will explain to you why I call myself the political heir of ‘Bade Saheb’. He started as MLA from Alauli in Bihar in 1969 and quit the seat in 1977 when he became the MP from Hajipur. He asked me to contest from the assembly seat and I followed his orders, though I was in government service.”
