Lalduhoma is an Indian politician and a former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from Mizoram. Lalduhoma is the founder and president of the Zoram Nationalist Party, a regional political party in Mizoram.

Lalduhoma was born on Tuesday, 22 February 1949 (age 74 years; as of 2023) in Tualpui, Mizoram. His zodiac sign is Pisces. He received his primary education at Khawzawl Elementary School and completed his matriculation from Govt. G.M High School Champhai. In 1976, he obtained a degree in Bachelor of Arts at North Eastern Hill University (Nehu), Shillong, Meghalaya. He gained a bachelor’s degree while working at Chief Minister C. Chhunga’s office.

Lalduhoma’s father, Vaisanga, was a farmer in Tualpui village. His mother, Kaichhingi, was a homemaker. He has four siblings. He is the youngest child of his parents.

Career

Civil Service

In 1972, Lalduhoma was appointed as Principal Assistant by the first Chief Minister of Mizoram C. Chhunga. He worked as Principal Assistant at the Chief Minister’s office in Mizoram from 1972 to 1977. After graduating, he qualified for the Indian civil services examination and joined the Indian Police Service in 1977, where he served as a squad leader at Goa. In 1982, he was transferred to New Delhi to serve as security in charge of the Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi. He was later promoted to Deputy Commissioner of Police. In 1982, he became the secretary of the organising committee chaired by Rajiv Gandhi for the Asian Games 1982. He resigned from the security service to Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984.

Politics

On 31 May 1984, Lalduhoma was elected as President of Mizoram INC. In the same year, he was appointed as the vice chairman of the Mizoram State Planning Board. In 1985, he joined the Mizo National Front (MNF) as an advisor. In 1997, he established the Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP), a regional political party in Mizoram. In 2003, he was elected to the Mizoram Assembly. In the 2018 election, he joined as a leader of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) which became a registered political party in 2019. In the 2018 Mizoram Legislative Assembly election, he was chosen as the first Chief Ministerial candidate. He was elected as the opposition leader of the Members of the Legislative Assembly in the Mizoram Legislative Assembly. In the 2003 election, he was elected to the Mizoram Legislative Assembly from Ratua Assembly constituency as the Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) candidate. On 17 April 2021, Lalduhoma was re-elected from both Aizawl West I and Serchhip constituencies in the by-elections by defeating his opponent of the MNF party, Vanlalzawma by 3,310 votes.

Controversy

Lalduhoma became the first MLA to be removed from any state legislature in India

On 27 November 2020, the Lok Sabha Speaker, Lalrinliana Sailo disqualified him under the anti-defection law in India. In September 2020, 12 MLAs of Mizo National Front (MNF), appealed to Lalrinliana Sailo, the Mizoram Legislative Assembly Speaker for Lalduhoma to be removed from his post as he violated the anti-defection law by serving as leader of the ZPM party while being elected as an independent candidate.  The Anti-Defection Law says that if an independently elected member joins any party after the election, he can be disqualified by the government. I contested as independent because the registration of my party ZPM was not complete… The law is to punish defectors who join another party but I have remained faithful to the ZPM… My case is unprecedented in India.”

Award

On 11 November 2023, he was awarded the Pride of Nation Award by the Governor, Lt. Gen.(Rtd.) Madan Mohan Lakhera in Hindi Diamond Jubilee National Award’ at the Durbar Hall of the Raj Bhawan, Aizawl.

In 1997, the Mizo National Front (MNF) party, founded by Lalduhoma was renamed as Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP).
