Kovai Sarala is an Indian actor who is mainly known for his supporting roles in Tamil and Telugu films. She is a comedian and has received Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Comedian, Best Female Comedian and Vijay Award for Best Comedian for her amazing performance in various films. She is known for her roles in Sathi Leelavathi (1995), Kanchana (2011) and Muand Mersal (2017). He is also known for his popular comedy songs with Vadivelu (Kumaravadivel Natarajan). He is a member of Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) political party.

He made his debut in the Tamil film industry in 1979 by acting in the film Velli Ratham. Kovai was in the 9th grade when he got a chance to work with Vijayakumar and KR Vijaya in the film Velli Ratham.

Cinema has always fascinated me since childhood. I wanted to be that in the industry one day. So far I have done more than 500 films in all South Indian languages mainly Tamil. I have acted in around 100 films in Telugu, apart from six films each in Malayalam and Kannada.”
In 2022, Kovai Sarala appeared in the lead role in the film Sembi, where she played the role of Veerathai, the grandmother of ten-year-old Sembi, who was gang-raped by three powerful villains. The story revolves around Veerathai how he manages to do justice to his grandson Sembi. The film was written and directed by Prabhu Solomon and released worldwide on December 30, 2022. The film was also released on the OTT platform in February 2023. In an interview, he shared the experience of playing a serious role in the movie Sembi. She said,
Even when I’m doing comedy, I’m usually serious, maybe punching someone for a good laugh. sirika vekuratu oru periya bakiyam. I consider this to be God’s gift to me. Although I always wanted to play a serious role that would be integral to the film, I never got it. So when Prabu Solomon sir approached me with an interesting role, I agreed even though the character is an elderly woman (laughs). However, I wasn’t sure if I could do the role. In fact, this story kept me awake for two months. Although I am used to enjoying freedom in a play, here I told Sir that I would be a puppet to repeat his actions. It’s as different as kindergarten and college. I felt like a PhD student for this film (smiles). When the director explained the role to me, I felt like I had wasted a lot of time in the industry. In my comedy films, I had to laugh 10 faces and cry 15 faces. I had to do exactly what the director wanted.”

Tamilnadu women are oppressed and this needs to change. We must make sure that the men in our homes vote for a party that will work for the advancement of women (MNM). I have heard a lot of criticism about actors entering politics. But I believe that actors playing different roles can empathize with the plight of common people. They (actors) are the ones who will be able to solve the problems of the common man. That’s why I have an emotional connection with this party.”

I was not prepared for the wooden scene at all. For four hours I had to sit on a tree trunk overlooking a 1,500-foot elevation. There was no point in following the safety measures, because if someone falls from such a height, you won’t even find the body. I believe that my acting instructions come from the Almighty and I have no right to question it. Despite my best efforts, some people even asked me if it was VFX and that hurt me a bit. From this scene to carrying Raghava Lawrence on Master’s waist in Kanchana films, everything I do is real.”
