Misa Bharti is an Indian politician and the eldest child of Indian politicians Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi. He has been a member of the Rajya Sabha since 2016.

Misa Bharti was born in 1976 (age 47; as of 2023) in Patna, Bihar. He obtained his MBBS degree from Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) in 2000 and passed his MBBS examinations with distinction in Gynecology and ENT. Even after clearing the MBBS exams, Misa did not take up the medical profession, instead choosing to follow her father’s shoes and enter politics in 2014.

Misa Bharti is the eldest child of Lalu Yadav and Rabri Yadav. Both his parents served as CM of Bihar for almost 15 years. He has eight siblings: two brothers; Tejashwi Yadav (politician) and Tej Pratap Yadav (politician) and six sisters; Rohini Acharya, Chanda Singh, Ragini Yadav, Hema Yadav, Anushka Rao and Raj Laxmi.

Misa’s father Lalu Yadav arranged Misa’s marriage to Shailesh Kumar, a computer engineer from the same caste as Lalu Yadav’s family. She married Shailesh Kumar on 10 December 1999.

Political career
Despite being a medical graduate, Misa was always interested in politics for the obvious reasons of being born into an influential political family. Finally, he started his political career in 2014 by unsuccessfully contesting the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Pataliputra Lok Sabha constituency.

He lost voters to former RJD loyalist Ram Kripal Yadav, who joined the BJP after the RJD fielded Misa from Pataliputra in place of Kripal. Misa cited lack of preparation as the reason for the failure. In July 2016, Misa Bharti was elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha and also as the leader of the RJD in the Rajya Sabha. In 2016, he was appointed as a member of the Food, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Committee. In 2017, he was appointed as a member of the Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After his failed attempt from Patliputra in 2014 general elections, he made another attempt in 2019 general elections from the same seat.
Misa Bharti will file her nomination papers in the presence of her mother and senior party leader Rabri Devi ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Patna.
His opponent was again the same, RJD rebel Ram Kripal Yadav. This time he lost the electorate by 38,000 votes.

- On March 7, 2015, Misa Bharti posted a picture on her Facebook page showing her standing on a podium, clearly addressing an audience, with the fictional caption, “Harvard Vishwavidyalaya mein yuvaaon ki bhagidari ko lekar vyakhyaan dete hue” (Your role speech at Harvard). Several newspapers in Bihar also carried the news. As soon as the story broke, a Harvard University official denied her claim. - In September 2018, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) attached a farm owned by Misa Bharti and her husband Shailesh Kumar in Delhi’s Bijwasan area in a money laundering case. Later in 2019, the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) Appellate Tribunal quashed the attachment of the farmhouse.
- In January 2019, Misa Bharti, while addressing a political rally, made a controversial remark against RJD’s staunch rival Ram Kripal Yadav when she said, “
We had a lot of respect for him (Ram Kripal Yadav). However, that came to a halt when he left and BJP’s Sushil Kumar Modi joined hands… He was cutting the chandelier. At that time I wanted to cut his hands with the same cutting machine.
- In 2019, his brother Tej Pratap’s ex-wife Aishwarya Rai accused him of being the reason for the marriage’s failure.
- On 27 February 2023, a Delhi court summoned Misa Bharti, her parents Rabri Devi and Lalu Yadav and others in a case related to the alleged land-for-work scam. The CBI, in its charge sheet, alleged that during Prasad’s tenure as railway minister between 2004 and 2009, his family was allegedly compensated with plots of land. On 15 March 2023, the court granted bail to Lalu Yadav, Rabri Devi and Misa Bharti on a personal bond of Rs 50,000 each and a surety of like amount each.

Facts/Trivia
- Misa is named after the controversial Internal Security Act (MISA) under which her father, Lalu Yadav, was imprisoned during the Emergency. Lalu Yadav chose this name for her first daughter after she was released from prison.

- In 1993, Misa passed the entrance exam of MGM Medical College, Jamshedpur; However, his chief minister father helped him get admission in TISCO quota.
- Misa’s wedding was so lavish that it led to an Income Tax inquiry against her parents regarding the extravagant expenses of the wedding functions.
