Before Sengar called his daughter home to offer her a job and raped her, Asha Singh’s family was on friendly terms with Sengar’s family, and her husband was a close political aide of Sengar. He has one son and four daughters. Although Asha Singh is illiterate, he has educated all his daughters and one of his daughters has even completed a master’s degree.
First media appearance
In April 2018, Asha Singh was in the media spotlight for her complaint against Kuldeep Singh Sengar, her brother Atul and others who were involved in killing Pappu and raping her daughter on behalf of her husband Surendra Singh.
The case of the rape of his daughter
Asha Singh’s 17-year-old daughter, who was a minor at the time, was gang-raped in Unao, Uttar Pradesh on June 4, 2017 by former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, her brother Jaydeep, Aul Singh and others after she was abducted from her village Mankhi.

According to the victim’s statement, which she recorded before a judicial magistrate on June 22, 2017, Shubham Singh, Audhesh Tiwari, Brijesh Yadav and other unidentified assailants were responsible for the abduction and gang-rape. A second FIR was later lodged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO) and the accused were arrested. On July 28, 2019, a speeding truck with a blacked-out license plate collided with a car carrying the victim, her lawyer, and two aunts; As a result of the accident, both the aunts were killed and the victim and her lawyer were seriously injured.
Supreme Court intervention
Taking into account the letter written by the victim and her family to the CJI on August 1, 2019, the high court transferred the cases related to the rape case to Delhi and directed the court to complete it within 45 days.
Trial and conviction
The daily trial began on August 5, 2019, at the Tis Hazari court in Delhi. The victim was shifted from Lucknow’s King George Medical College to the AIIMS trauma center in New Delhi. The trial court ordered the victim and her family to be rented accommodation in Delhi by the Delhi Commission for Women on December 6, 2019, after she was discharged from AIIMS, New Delhi on September 25, 2019. Former BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar was convicted on 16 December 2019 and sentenced to life imprisonment on 209 December. 25 GEL.

On 13 January 2022, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee in charge of Uttar Pradesh, released a list of 125 candidates for the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections, in which Asha Singh’s name was among the 50 women on the list. Announcing the list, Priyanka Gandhi said:
The list sends a new signal that if you are someone who has faced injustice, then you have the power to fight it. Congress will stand by you and support you.”
Thanking Proyanka Gandhi for the opportunity to contest the Assembly elections, Asha Singh said:
He gave me and the women of the state such respect, which no political party had done before.”
In an interview, when she was asked about her reason for contesting the assembly elections, Asha Singh said that her fight against the Samtheters was not possible without gaining political strength. She said,
I know it will kill my daughter, me and other family members if we become careless. Sengar, his family and BJP are still active against us. I need the political power to continue fighting the monsters, even if many of them are in prison. That is why I asked the general secretary of the Congress to give me the ticket.
In January 2022, Asha Singh started his election campaign in his native village, Unao, where he returned after almost four years. During the campaign, he vowed to oust the ruling BJP government from the state. She said,
The BJP removed Sengar from the party after many months and only under media pressure. But the Supreme Court threw out the case based on media coverage and we finally got justice. But socio-political justice is yet to come – Sengar may be in jail, but the BJP is still in power in Uttar Pradesh and the country. I ask voters how they can support a party that supports thugs and murderers.

Asha Singh’s rape survivor daughter also helped her mother in her election campaign. In an interview with a newspaper, his daughter also promised to campaign against the BJP in the elections. She said,
I am a rape survivor. I can tell you that BJP is very harmful for women. The whole country should take this into account when voting. We will soon rent a house and an election office in the city of Unao and start a full-fledged campaign.”
