Dharminder Singh chose a career in sports as a child. He worked out 5 to 6 hours a day to improve his muscles and flexibility. Later he became a member of Daun Kalan Village Kabaddi Club and started playing Kabaddi. He started his career by participating in local kabaddi tournaments.

On 5 April 2022, Dharminder Singh was shot dead after a clash broke out between rival groups from his village Daun Kalan and Teri village in front of Punjab University in Patiala. He was reportedly chased by his rival group after he introduced his fellow villagers during a meeting with a rival group in the township off campus. He was later killed on the road outside the university. Dharminder Singh, president of Daun Kalan Village Kabaddi Club, was also politically active. He quit the Shiromani Akali Dal ahead of the February 2022 Punjab Assembly elections and campaigned for the Aam Aadmi Party in Ganaur. He had a canvas for another kabaddi player, Gurlal Ganaur. According to sources, two of the accused are Tejbir Singh and Harbir Singh, who are accompanied by one. The group were drinking at a local restaurant when they got into an argument and the deceased reportedly assaulted them while they were working on him. Later, the couple allegedly returned with several others and assaulted her. One of them took out a gun and shot Dharminder. Harpal Singh, Superintendent of Police (SP), Patiala informed about the incident said,
The incident happened around 11:30 pm on Tuesday when two groups got into a heated argument. The dispute had a violent character and a shot was fired, as a result of which the victim died on the spot.”
He also added,
During the investigation, it was revealed that another university student, identified as Harbir Singh, had a personal enmity against the victim. Urban Estate police have registered an FIR against four suspects in the case. The investigation is underway to arrest the accused.”
The video depicting the incident, which was recorded on the girl’s phone, became popular on the Internet. The video captures the entire encounter, which will help authorities in their investigation.
Dharminder Singh’s murder case is linked to the murder of another international kabaddi player Sandeep Singh Nangal Ambian, which also took place almost a month back in Punjab. He was also killed by four attackers in Jalandhar on March 15, 2022.
Taking stock of the incidents, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann directed Punjab Police Commissioner V.K. He, who chaired a high-level conference of the police department, emphasized the need to eradicate organized crime as a top priority. He told the officers that the police will have the necessary manpower, equipment and information technology as well as adequate funding to disrupt the nexus, which has already spread its wings into drug peddling and kabaddi sports. Cricketer and politician Navyot Singh Sidhu questioned the law and order situation in Punjab on Twitter. He tweeted,
