He also worked as a salesman in a shop in Rawalpindi apart from playing cricket. Tape-ball cricket is a form of cricket practice where a tennis ball is wrapped with tape to alter its movement in the air. Recalling that time, Harris Rauff told a local channel that,
“Lahore Qalandars ka trial tha aur Tarif bhai (trainer) speed gun leke khade hue (It was the trial of the Lahore Qalandars and Tarif Bhai was standing with a quick gun). ek banda 87 mari, toh mein socha mere ko aris se ziada tez dalna hai (Someone was bowling at 87 kmph, so I thought I should bowl faster than him). Toh jab ball dala, speed gun 88 dikhaya (So when I bowled, the speed gun read 88 mph). Tabhi mere ko next round jane ka mauka mila (Only after that I got a pass to enter the next round).
In 2019, he was bought by Melbourne team to play in the Big Bash League (BBL) when he replaced the injured former South African pacer, Dale Steyn. It was his debut season where he took 20 wickets.
He has since had an exceptional PSL (Pakistan Super League), BBL season.
As a result, he was called up to the national team in January 2020. His first international game was a T20 match against Bangladesh on 24 January at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. In this match he took 32 runs and took one wicket of Afif Hossain; He hit nine runs. He was also interested in their star opener Tamim Iqbal. Pakistan won this match by five wickets.
A few months later, in June 2020, he was selected in the Pakistan squad to tour England. However, he was left out of the team when he tested positive for COVID along with two other players from the Pakistan team. On 30 October 2020, he made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. In this match he did not concede a single wicket and conceded 57 runs in ten overs at an economy of 5.7. However, Pakistan won the match by 26 runs to lead the three-match series 1-0. Two days later she took their captain Chamu Chibhabha’s maiden skirt; He was held back. Pakistan won this match by six wickets.
He took three wickets in the next two games of the series. His best bowling performance was against England on 13 July 2021, where he took four wickets for 65 runs in nine overs. Pakistan scored 331 runs after batting first. In reply, Harris Rauff removed their top order batsmen Phil Salt and Zach Crowley when the score was 104 runs. He soon took over the strand of their centurion James Vince. But England won the match with 12 balls to spare.
In July 2021, he was named by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in the Central Contracted Player category for 2020–21. In an official release issued by the PCB, Harris said,
“I am very happy to hear this news in the derby and I will certainly take it as motivation for this year.”
Soon, in September, he was selected in Pakistan’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2021. Pakistan’s opening match was against arch-rivals India on 24 October 2021. India put 151 runs on the board after batting first for the loss of seven wickets. Harris Rauf took the wicket of Hardik Pandya after conceding 25 runs in four overs at an economy rate of 6.25. Pakistan won this historic match by ten wickets.
Their next match was against the Kiwis in Sharjah on October 26. New Zealand were cruising when Harris Rauff removed their star opener Martin Guptill for 17 runs in the sixth over. He didn’t stop there. He went on to scalp three more wickets of Devon Conway, Glenn Phillips and Mitchell Santner while conceding 22 runs at an economy of 5.5 runs. Pakistan won this match again by five wickets and secured a place in the semi-finals.
Till October 2021, he played 8 ODI games and took 14 wickets with a career economy of 5.97. His most wickets are in England. Interestingly, his record in away matches is better than at home, unlike other Asian bowlers with 13 wickets. He has only played under Babar Azam in this format. He also played 27 T20I games before that and took 35 wickets at an economy rate of 8.58. He has taken the most wickets against the Kiwis (9 wickets).

The controversy arose when it was claimed that Harris Rauff cut his throat every time he took a wicket in a Big Bash League (BBL) match against the Sydney Thunders while playing for the Melbourne Stars. Many fans condemned this gesture from the Pakistani pacer. One Pakistani fan wrote:
“Harris Rauff is spectacular, but he needs to change his style of celebration. A celebration of slitting throats should have no place on the cricket field. Someone has to guide this young man.”
Facts/Trivia
- In 2017, he revealed
“My father did not like cricket. He said without recommendation, you are not going to make a career. Then I was picked for Lahore Qalandars where talent and not recommendation was the only measure.
- Former Australian spinner Brad Hogg, while revealing the reason for his inclusion in the 2021 T20 World Cup, said:
“He knows he’s naked, a little wet behind the ears, he knows he doesn’t have much experience and knowledge at the international level. So he listens to his teammates in the middle like Babar Azam, Malik and Hafeez, those experienced players, just to give him the comfort of the ball that he needs to take next in pressure situations. I thought it was brilliant and he did the same against New Zealand. You have to adapt and you can adapt.”
He further adds,
“One thing he has to be careful about is that he bowls a slower ball in the pattern. He bowls alternate slow balls, so opposition teams are going to settle for that and wait for slower deliveries. So he has to shake up his pattern. “
- Former Pakistan batsman Salman Booth reveals Haris Rauf’s journey in world cricket and says:
“Yeh ek eise emerging star hai joh GT Road se nahi aaye hain (He is one emerging star whose entry into the Pakistan team has not been linear).
- In one of the PSL 2020 matches, Haris Rauf recognized Shahid Afridi after taking his wicket. His coach and former Pakistani fast bowler Akib Javed said:
“He’s going through a learning curve. He behaves well, respects his elders. It is necessary to grow not only as a cricketer but also as a person. I feel good when I see his development.”
