His father hails from Patiala, Punjab. He did his schooling at Yadwindra Public School, Mohali. Harleen attended MCM DAV College, Chandigarh to pursue her graduation in Arts. He got interested in cricket at a young age and started playing cricket with his brother at the age of seven. Soon he started accompanying his brother to the neighborhood park where he played cricket with him and his friends. When his brother entered higher studies, he stopped playing cricket. However, Harlin continued to play cricket with the other boys in the park. Seeing Deoli (the only girl) playing cricket with the boys, the neighbors often complained about her to her mother, which she often ignored. Once when Harleen was in Class 3, his school cricket coach Praveen Singha noticed him bowling against the best batsman in his class. Impressed with his skills at such a young age, his coach asked him to attend trials for the under-19 school team. He was eight years old at that time. After his selection in the Tests, Harleen started playing for his school’s cricket team in inter-school matches. Subsequently, he started playing inter-district cricket under his coach RP Singh. Deol idolized Brett Lee as a child. After Harlin occasionally bowled leg-spinner as a variation, his coach once asked him to try out for Punjab’s junior team as there was a demand for a leg-spinner.

Jones appeared to be hitting 43 when, in the nineteenth over of the innings, off the bowling of Shikha Pandey, he lofted the ball towards the boundary line, hoping to clear the pitch. However, when the ball reached the rope, Deol, who was positioned at the far off, timed his jump perfectly and caught the ball safely. The moment he realized the rope was about to go into momentum, he quickly tossed the ball into the air and ran back onto the court to catch it again before it hit the ground.
