In his final year at Upendra College, he began his career as a writer and assistant director to the late actor and filmmaker Kashinatha Hatwara.

The 1992 Kannada film Tharle Nan Maga was Upendra’s directorial debut.

Upendra directed the horror suspense thriller film ‘Shhh!’ In 1993 and 1998 he made Kannada films “Swasthik” and “A”. In 1999, Upendra made a film called Upendra.

  • When Upendra was in school, he actively participated in debates, cultural activities and wrote plays.
  • When Upendra was young, his family was poor. They could not pay for the eye problem that Upendra had as a child.
  • Due to the poor conditions at home, Upendra and his brother did odd jobs like making paper sleeves out of newspapers and delivering them to roadside fruit vendors and packing parcels to earn money.
  • When Upendra was in school, he participated in a children’s play ‘Compounder Gunda’ in which he shouted as part of his acting. When his performance was appreciated by the audience, he decided to become an actor.
  • Upendra’s film ‘om’ (1995) became a blockbuster which was later remade in several languages. In 1999, its Hindi version titled Arjun Pandit was released, starring Sunny Deol.
