Political career
Chitra joined the Nationalist Congress Party in 2014 and served as the president of the NCP’s Maharashtra women’s wing. In 2019, he resigned and left the party. In 2021, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and was appointed as the state president of the BJP Maharashtra Mahila Morcha on 3 November 2022.

In September 2021, the Marina Drive police registered a case against Chitra under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) when he was protesting outside Mantralaya. He protested against the Maha Vikas Agadi (MVA)-led Maharashtra government demanding a special assembly session to discuss women’s safety. In November 2022, he was acquitted in this case.
Accused of portraying BJP leaders in wrong light
In February 2022, Chitra courted controversy when she was accused of forcing a 23-year-old girl to accuse Shiv Sena deputy leader Raghunath Kuchik of raping her. The 23-year-old accused the BJP leader of false marriage promises, torture, threats and forced abortion. Kuczyk completely denied the allegations, saying:
A case has been registered for political conspiracy to defame me and my family. It is also a form of blackmail and an attempt to damage my work in the labor sector and my long-standing social and political image.”
After some time, he was granted anticipatory bail by a Pune court. Chitra was not satisfied with the decision and asked the court to take action against her. In April 2022, the victim dropped the charges against Kuchiki, instead claiming that Chitra forced her to file a case against Kuchiki. He also claimed that it was Chitra who forced him to submit the suicide note to the media. Chitra felt betrayed and denied the allegations saying:
The victim of the Raghunath Kuchik case now heard the allegations against me… actually felt bad but I didn’t mind. I stood by the victim who was fighting alone since February when no one helped him, but today I am happy that everyone united against me. I am ready for all investigations.”
Later, Chitra was also accused of defaming Kuchik, following which Kuchik’s daughter filed an FIR against him.
Viral video of Nana Patole on Twitter
In July 2022, a video of BJP leader Nana Patole went viral on social media. In the video, he was seen hanging around the neck of a woman in a hotel. Chitra reposted her video on social media and held a press conference to talk about it, saying:
The video coming out from Nana Patole is shocking. Be it Solapur, Raigad, Nana Pathole or any party, when you represent the people, your responsibility increases manifold. Everyone should act responsibly. What lessons have people learned from this? It is wrong to interfere in someone’s private life. But when that thing becomes public, it doesn’t stay private. Today, after the video went viral, it came to me. That’s why I asked Nana, are you also Nana?

On 1 January 2023, Chitra courted controversy when she filed a police complaint against social media personality Urfi Javed for wearing a revealing outfit. He took to Twitter and wrote:
Today I met the Mumbai Commissioner of Police and the Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) and requested them to take immediate legal action against Warfi Javed for public nudity on the streets of Mumbai.
When called to the police station, he said he could wear whatever he wanted because it was his constitutional right. He also filed a complaint for threatening Chitra. Urfi tweeted about the incident and wrote:
This is how ancient Hindu women used to dress. Hindus were liberal, educated, women had the right to choose their clothes, actively participated in sports, politics. They were sexual and female body positive people. First go learn about bharthiya sanskrit.

- In an interview in 2015, she said that under the BJP-Shiv Sena government, women in rural areas were not present at police stations when they went to file sexual harassment cases.
- In October 2020, when Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi traveled to meet the family members of the Hatras rape victim. He was stopped by a policeman who insulted him by grabbing his kurta. Chitra expressed her outrage over the matter and asked the UP government to take strict action against the police officer. He took to Twitter and wrote:
How dare a male police officer wear the clothes of a female leader. If women come forward in support, then wherever the police are, their dignity should be taken care of. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who believes in Indian culture, should take strict action against such policemen.
- In February 2021, Chitra’s husband was accused of owning 90.24 percent of the assets, which was disproportionate to her income. A case was initiated against him under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Law. In 2016, when he was working as a librarian at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital, he was accused of accepting bribes. In February 2017, an open investigation was conducted against him and raids were also conducted at his home. After reopening the case in 2021, BJP leader Praveen Darekar said it was a move by the Maha Vikas Agadi government as his wife Chitra was actively trying to prove the involvement of state forest minister and Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Rathod in Deepali Chavan’s suicide case.
- In March 2022, the government provided Asha workers (community health workers) with a planning consultation kit that included models of male and female reproductive organs that Asha workers found uncomfortable to wear and use during workshops. Chitra criticized the government for providing such kits.
- On March 14, 2022, in Mumbai, a mother and her three daughters were misled by a Hindu guru who asked them to change their religion and sexually assaulted them. Chitra criticized the Maha Vikas Agadi government for not taking strict action in the case. In an interview, he talked about it and said:
It is really sad and shocking that some “Baba” dared to act. The woman and her daughter are from an educated family and are still being exploited by this man. This has to stop. I would stand by these women and restore their justice if the police do not act.”
- In August 2022, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Rathore was charged with the 2021 death of a 23-year-old girl named Pooja Chavan. Chavan killed himself after jumping from the balcony of his flat. After his death, several audio clips of the conversation between Chavan and Rathod were released. On 14 February 2021, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray asked Rathod to resign from the party. In 2022, he was again appointed as a cabinet minister. Chitra was not happy with the decision taken by the party and in an interview she said:
It is very sad that former minister Sanjay Rathore, who caused Pooja Chavan’s death, has again taken the post of minister. Even though Sanjay Rathore became a minister again, I continued to fight against him.”
- In December 2022, he held a press conference and questioned the government about the vehicles missing from the Nirbhaya funds. It claimed that 220 vehicles were purchased from the Nirbhaya funds, but only 121 were allocated to the police stations and the rest were used by the government for its own use.
