He did his schooling at Radhanagar Majumder Academy School and College, Pabna. He attended Rajshahi University in Bangladesh to pursue a Masters in Science (1974). He received his LLB from Rajshahi University in 1975. Shahabuddin was active in student politics during his college days. He was a leader of the student and youth wing of the Awami League in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Legal practitioner

Mohammad Shahabuddin Chupu was recruited in 1982 in Bangladesh Judicial Service (BCS Cadre) as Munsef (Assistant Judge). Simultaneously, he served as Public Secretary of Awami League of Pabna District Unit. In 1995, he was elected as the General Secretary of the Judicial Service Association. Additionally, Chupu was appointed as the coordinator of Bangabandhu’s assassination trial by the Law Ministry when the Awami League returned to power after the 1996 elections. After serving as a judge for 25 years, Shahabuddin Chupu retired as District and Sessions Judge in 2006. He was also the Chairman of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry established by BBB leaders and workers after the elections201 to investigate rapes, robberies, murders and inhumane acts by BBB leaders and workers. In 2006, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Labor Court. From 2008 to 2011, Chupu worked as a lawyer in the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. After his retirement, Shahabuddin Chupu was the Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission from March 2011 to March 2016. While serving in the Bangladesh Judicial Service, Shahabuddin Chupu visited various countries of the world and participated in various local and international workshops, seminars, symposia and judicial conferences organized on judicial matters.

Shahabuddin Chupu joined politics at a young age at the student level. After that, he continued to move in and out of politics several times. He was associated with Awami League from the beginning. In the 1970s, he left politics and worked as a freedom fighter for the independence of Bangladesh. He resumed politics after the country gained independence in 1971. In 1982, he served as Public Secretary of Awami League of Pabna District Unit. After that, he again left politics to pursue the legal profession. After resigning as Commissioner of Anti-Corruption Commission, Shahabuddin Chupu re-entered politics and was appointed as a member of Awami League’s Advisory Council, comprising senior party leaders and technocrats, in 2020. He has been appointed as the chairman of Awami League after the 2020 advisory of the former Prime Minister Imam League. 2. In December 2022, Chupu was the Election Commissioner of Bangladesh.

President of Bangladesh

On 12 February 2023, Mohammad Shahabuddin Chupu was nominated for the post of President by the ruling Awami League, which has an absolute majority in the Bangladesh Parliament (holding 305 seats in the 350-seat parliament). Apparently, his name was suggested by Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Kuder. The opposition of the party did not submit a candidacy to the Jatiya party in the parliament. The Awami League’s main opposition non-parliamentary Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) could not nominate anyone as all seven of its MPs resigned in December 2022. Thus, Shahabuddin would be elected as the President of Bangladesh. He will resume his position on April 24, 2023.

From 1980-82, Shahabuddin Chupu worked as a journalist for Daily Banglar Bani, the national newspaper of Bangladesh. He also wrote columns for several newspapers. Since 2023, Shahabuddin is the Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of Islami Bank Bangladesh Ltd. He represents JMC Builders Ltd. on the board. He has also served as an advisor to NRB Global Bank. Chupu is involved in various social, educational and cultural organizations in Bangladesh. Freedom fighter

In August 1975, Chuppu was arrested by the police for organizing protests (because he opposed the newly formed government that took over after Bangabandhu) after the assassination of Bangladesh’s founder, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, father of Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, along with his family in a military coup. In this case, he was sentenced to three years in prison. After his release from prison, Shahabuddin Chupu moved to India to meet his colleagues.
