Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee

VM Sudheeran was appointed as the President of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on 10 February 2014. Sudheran was appointed by the party high command as a game changer of sorts for the party ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections; It acted as a corrective force in the Congress party and was widely accepted in the civil society. Sudhiran’s confrontational approach to certain issues handled by the then state government led by veteran Congress leader Oommen Chand earned him detractors in the party. The then Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and the then Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala disagreed with the AICC’s decision to appoint Sudheran as KPCC president; Sudhiran was strongly opposed to factional politics and top leaders belonging to Congress Group A and Congress Group I feared that his appointment would be an antidote to growing factionalism. According to some reports, Oommen Chandy and Ramesh Chennithala proposed to the then Kerala Assembly Speaker G. Karthikeyan’s name to the party high command to be appointed as the new KPCC president; However, the party leadership decided to appoint Sudheran in the belief that his popularity among the public as a corruption-free politician would help them in the 2014 Indian general elections. Since his appointment, Sudheran has come under fire from both the Congress Group A and the Congress Group I for his style of functioning; Sudhiran was not a member of the Congress Group A or the Congress Group I, and he often criticized the leaders of the groups for trying to weaken the unity of the party. Sudhiran resigned as the president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee on 10 March 2017 due to ill health. In an interview, Sudheeran revealed that he resigned as KPCC president due to personal embarrassment and that the party’s interests were paramount; He added that his difficulties should not affect the work of the party.
