Raju Pal entered politics in the 2002 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections on a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) ticket. He lost the seat to gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed. In November 2004, Raju won a by-election, defeating Atiq Ahmed’s younger brother Ashraf, Alias Khalid Azim, who represented the Allahabad West district on a Samajwadi Party (SP) ticket.

When Raju Pal defeated Ashraf in the 2004 by-elections, he finally became a threat to the political careers of Ashraf and Atiq Ahmed. The political controversy somehow turned into a personal rivalry. On January 25, 2005, when Raju Pal was on his way home from Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital in Allahabad, a car overtook his Qualis. Raju was attacked by a group of gangsters in Sulem Sarai area. According to sources, around 18 bullets hit him and two people, Sandeep Yadav and Devi Lal, who were with him, were also shot dead. The assailants opened fire on another vehicle belonging to Raju Pal, injuring three others named Ruksana, Saif alias Saifullah and Om Prakash Pal. The murder was a sensational case that drew national attention, and Attic was blamed for her assailant.
