Confrontation
refused to receive a diploma
In 2018, students of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences protested the institute’s management’s decision to withdraw financial assistance from SC, ST and OBC students who were eligible for the Government of India Post-Matric Scholarship (GoIPMS). More than 400 students protested at the convocation ceremony, resulting in nine students refusing to receive their diplomas and 300 students wearing badges to protest the administration. Fahad Ahmed was one of the nine students who refused to accept the master’s degree from the university chairman.
The administration said Fahad’s actions were an insult to the university and denied his registration for the doctoral program. Commenting on this in an interview, Ahmed said that the institute “follows the agenda set by the government” and also said,
We have nine students, most of them from the reserved category, who have refused to take their degrees and more than 300 students are wearing badges in protest. The matter could have been easily resolved if the institute had shown resolve to seek money from the Tata Trust. 2 crore rupees is a pittance for an institution that does crores of rupees.
In an interview, talking about the issue of Ph.D., Fahad said,
I was denied registration because I was fighting for social justice and I didn’t give up even when other student union members left. I was denied a quality education because it is easy to target Muslims now and because asking questions and expressing opinions is not allowed in this country. I was refused registration because I declared an undeclared state of emergency in TISS and in our country in general. I and a few other students are facing punishment for participating in the protest as the administration has withheld our JRF forms. But we are in this fight together. “
