Sreesanth was born on 6 February 1983 in Kottamangalam, Kerala. When he was in the 8th standard, he became the champion in a dance competition. After 11th standard, he dropped out to focus on cricket. He passed his 11th standard from Bhavans Vidya Mandir, Elamakara, Kochi. As a child, he was a foot rower. He was copying the action of Indian bowling ace Anil Kumble. He considers Anil Kumble as his role model. Because of his ability to bowl deadly yorkers, his elder brother encouraged him to be a fast bowler. Later, he emerged as one of the leading fast bowlers in the domestic and national circuits.

His father Santhakumaran Nair is a retired insurance officer and mother Savitri Devi is a retired state government employee. He has three siblings: his elder brother, Deepu Santhan, two elder sisters, Nivedita and Divya. His brother, Deepu Sanathan, owns a music company in Kochi. Sreesanth made his debut in domestic cricket in the 2002–03 season against Goa. In the 2004 Ranji Trophy game against Himachal Pradesh, Sreesanth scored a hat-trick. For his performance, he was selected for the India B Challenger Trophy in October 2005. He was awarded the Man of the Series award in the Challenger Trophy and this earned him selection in the national team for the ODI series against Sri Lanka in 2005. In his six-year career, he took 87 Test wickets, 75 ODIs and 720 wickets.
