Historical Twenty20 spells

On 8 November 2021, he entered the record books with a full quota of four overs in Syed Mushtaq Ali’s match against Manipur. Vidarbha posted 222 runs on the board with the help of Jitesh Sharma and Apoorv Wankhede. Manipur, on the other hand, looked off the track throughout the chase and finished with 55 runs in 17 overs. Akshay was effectively taken off the bowling after bowling three consecutive maidens. When he returned, he hit a six and ended his spell in four overs with zero runs for two wickets. This is the first full quota T20 spell where a bowler has not conceded a single run in men’s cricket.

After that he spoke to the media.

“It’s unbelievable. Not conceding a single run in the whole match is extraordinary and I feel good.

Former Vidarbha coach Sulashan Kulkarni praised his efforts and said that

“He is a big performance player. He showed his ability with the bat in the second Ranji final at Vidarbha. Then I scored 100 in the Irani Cup and now I have scored another big performance.

A new chapter in his record books awaited the next day too when he took a hat-trick in the last two balls of the eighth over and the first ball of the tenth over against Sikkim. Vidarbha posted 205 runs on the board. Sikkim managed only 75 runs in 20 overs after losing eight wickets. Akshay ended his spell with five runs in four overs and took four wickets. Interestingly, two of these dismissals were caught by the bowler and one was a hit wicket. Ajith Karthik, captain Kranti Kumar, wicketkeeper Ashish Thapa and Nilesh Lamichani were his victims.

Facts/Trivia

  • In an interview with a local news channel, he talked about his journey in two-way bowling and said that:

“When I was 13 years old, my coach Balu Navghare asked me if I can bowl with my left hand. Since then I have been using both arms. My intention is always to take wickets. I first observe how the batsmen are playing and then decide whether I really need to use both hands to take his wicket. Sometimes I don’t need it.”

    he also said

“I usually spin the bowl. My coach told me to bowl with my left hand. Due to the lack of left arm in the team, I played a lot and succeeded. But now I can play the bowl with both hands. Not only that, I can do a lot with both hands.”

  • His bowling in the warm-up against Australia so impressed Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis that he remarked:

“I actually didn’t know what the referee was trying to say. He was trying to say, “He’s going to take your left arm.” So that’s brilliant of him. I have never seen this before. “
