Career

Sadhu Singh Dharamsot was elected Youth Congress Coordinator when he was twenty years old. In 1992, he contested the Punjab Assembly elections from Amloh constituency and won the election. The then Punjab Chief Minister Bint Singh appointed Dharamsot as Deputy Minister (Youth Welfare). In 2002, he contested the Punjab Assembly elections for the second time from Amloh constituency and won. The then Chief Minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh appointed him as Parliamentary Secretary (Department of Public Works, Home and Youth Welfare). In the 2012 Punjab Assembly elections, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot contested from Nabha Assembly constituency and won the election, defeating SAD candidate Balwant Singh by 22,548 votes. In 2017, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot won the Punjab Legislative Assembly elections from Naba constituency on an Indian National Congress ticket. Soon after winning the elections, he was appointed as the Minister of Forests and Social Protection. Sadhu Singh Dharamsoti was an MLA in the Punjab Legislative Assembly for five terms. However, in the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections, he was defeated by Aam Aadmi Party candidate Gurdev Singh Mann from Nabha constituency by 51,554 votes.

Confrontation

On 7 June 2022, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot courted controversy when he was booked by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau under the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 120-B (conspiracy) of the IPC for allegedly cheating the forest department. He was involved in this conspiracy when he was a cabinet minister in Capt. Amarind Singh’s ministry and was the head of the forest department. A few days before the arrest, Guramanpreet Singh (District Forest Officer) and Harminder Singh Hum (contractor) were also arrested by the police for their involvement in the scam. Sadhu Singh was charged with illegal felling of more than 25,000 trees. In 2020, he was charged with the Post Matric Scholarship scam by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau for allegedly allowing illegal scholarship money to private colleges and universities in Punjab. At the time of the Post Matric scholarship scam, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot was serving as Social Security Minister on an Indian National Congress ticket.
