Charanjit Singh Chan is an Indian politician who became the 16th Chief Minister of Punjab on 20 September 2021 from the Indian National Congress. At the Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh, he was sworn in as the first Dalit Sikh Chief Minister of Punjab, India.

Charanjit Singh Chan was born on Friday 1 March 1963 (age 58; as of 2021) in village Makrona Kalan, Chamkaur Sahib, Punjab, India. His zodiac sign is Pisces. He did his schooling at Khalsa High School in Kharar. He then pursued BA LLB from the same university. He later did his Masters in Political Science from Panjab University, Chandigarh. After graduating from PU Law, he went to Punjab Technical University, Jalanhar, Punjab to pursue his MBA. He later rejoined Panjab University to pursue his PhD in Political Science.

Charanjit Singh Chan was inclined towards politics right from his teenage years. On graduation, he was elected as the General Secretary of the Students’ Union at Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Chandigarh. He was later elected as the general secretary of the Punjab Youth Congress.

State policy

Charanjit Singh Chani started his political career in 2002 when he was elected as the Leader of the Opposition in the 14th Punjab Vidhan Sabha. He worked as the president of Kharari Municipality Council for two years. Then he was appointed as a councilor of Kharari Municipality for three years. He later served as a member of the Committee on Public Enterprises, the Subordinate Legislation Committee, the Public Accounts and Privileges Committee of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha. He also served as a member of PPCC (Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee) for some time. In 2007, 2012 and 2017, Charanjit Singh Chan was elected as a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly from Chamkaur Sahib constituency. In 2007, Chani won an independent seat against a Congress candidate from Chamkaur Sahib constituency and became an associate member of the Shiromani Akali Dal in the Assembly. In December 2010, Captain Amarinder Singh helped Charanjit Singh Chan join the Indian National Congress. Senior Congress leader CP Joshi helped Charanjit Singh Chan build good relations with Rahul Gandhi after his return to the Indian National Congress in 2010. Charanjit Singh Chan served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Legislative Assembly from 2015 to 2016. On 19 September 2021, Congress leader Harish Rawat announced on his Twitter account that Charanjit Singh Chan had been elected as the 16th Chief Minister of Punjab. He tweeted,

After being elected as the 16th Chief Minister of Punjab, Chani took to Twitter to express his gratitude to the top leadership of the Indian National Congress. He tweeted,

He contested the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections from two seats, Chamkaur Sahib and Bhadaur and he lost both to Aam Aadmi Party’s Charanjit Singh and Lab Singh Ugoke respectively.
