Suvendu Adhikari is an Indian politician from West Bengal. Once a top aide of the All India Trinamool Congress (known as AITC or TMC), Mamata Banerjee, Suvendu resigned from the TMC and joined the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in December 2020.

Suvendu Adhikari was born on Tuesday, 15 December 1970 (age 50; as of 2020) in Kontai, Purba Medinipur, West Bengal. He graduated in Arts from Contai PK College followed by MA from Rabindra Bharati University in 2011.

Suvendu Adhikari was born into a Hindu Brahmin family. His father, Sisir Kumar Adhikari, is a member of the Indian Trinamool Congress and has been serving as a Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) for the third term since 2009 from the Kanth constituency.

Suvendu’s mother’s name is Gayatri Adhikari. His younger brother, Dibyendu Adhikari, is also a TMC politician. Dibiendu was elected as a Member of Parliament on a TMC ticket from Tamluk district in 2019.

His younger brother, Sumendu Adhikari, was also a member of the Trinamool Congress; However, he joined the BJP after Suvendu defected to the BJP.

Career

Suvendu Adhikari began his political journey in 1995 by joining the Indian National Congress (INC). In 1995, he was elected as a councilor on an INC ticket from Kontai Municipality in West Bengal. After the establishment of TMC as a political party in 1998, Suvendu was one of the first few people to receive core membership of TMC. Adhikari first entered the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in 2006 as a TMC MLA from Kanti Dakshin constituency. In the same year, he was also elected as the Mayor of Kant Municipal Corporation.

He played an important role in the Singur-Nandigram land movement that took place in 2007. The movement was launched in protest against the decision of the ruling Left Front government in West Bengal to create a special economic zone by acquiring 1,000 acres of people’s land in the village. Throughout the movement, he seemed to be at the forefront of the agitation. The success of the movement helped expand the TMC’s political base in West Bengal.

He made his Lok Sabha debut in 2009 from the Tamluk constituency after defeating his nearest rival Lakshman Sethi of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) by nearly 173,000 votes. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he defeated Sk. Ibrahim Ali of CPI (M) from Tamluk constituency and once again won the election from the constituency. Ahead of the 2016 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections, Suvendu was fielded by the TMC in the Nandigram constituency against Abdul Qadir Sheikh of the Left Front and Indian National Congress alliance. After winning the election, he resigned as Tamluk MP to join Vidhan Sabha. On 27 May 2016, after the TMC government was formed for the second time in a row, he was given the charge of the Transport Ministry in the state.

In November 2020, amid a growing rift between Suvendu Adhikari and TMC-supremo Mamata Banerjee, Suvendu began resigning from state government posts one by one. First, he resigned as the Chairman of the Hooghly River Bridge Commission (HRBC) on 26 November 2020. He then resigned as the West Bengal Transport Minister on 27 November 2020. Finally, he resigned as Nandigram MLA, which was accepted on 21 December 2020. Resigned due to technical reasons, he resigned from the primary membership of TMC on 17 December 2019. Two days later, on 19 December 2020, he joined the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) during a BJP rally in the company of Amit Shah.

It also took nine TMC MLAs and one MP to join the BJP. Political analysts termed it as a huge setback for the TMC ahead of the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections.

Ahead of the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections, Suvendu Adhikari has filed his candidacy from Nandigram constituency. His former party chief Mamata Banerjee also filed nomination from Nandigram.

He defeated Mamata Banerjee from Nandigram constituency by 1,736 votes in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. On 10 May 2021, he was elected as the Leader of the Opposition by the BJP in the West Bengal Assembly.

Confrontation
