Sangmitra first met Naval Kishore Shakya during their college days. Maurya and Kishore reportedly pursued their MBBS from ERA’s Lucknow Medical College & Hospital at the same time. They first became friends, and then they fell in love. The couple got married in 2010 after dating for several years. His wife, Naval Kishore Shakia, is a cancer surgeon and politician. Since 2022, he has been a member of the Samajwadi Party. The couple has a son named Samrajya. Sangmitra Maurya was born in a Hindu OBC family. In 2018, Sangmitra converted from Hinduism to Buddhism with her family. In April 2018, 500 low-caste Hindus (including Sanghmitra and his family) gathered at Veera Maidan, Maharashtra to convert to Buddhism. they chanted

I do not believe in Rama and Krishna, who are believed to be incarnations of God, nor do I worship them. … I do not believe and will not believe that Lord Buddha was an incarnation of Vishnu. … Hereafter I will lead my life according to the principles and teachings of the Buddha.”

Since then, he has been spreading the Buddhist faith.

After completing her MBBS, Sangmitra Maurya started working as a Medical Officer in the Pratapgarh District Hospital. He worked there for a while and then left his medical career to pursue a political career.

Sangmitra started his political career in 2010 by contesting Zilla Panchayat elections from Etah in Uttar Pradesh state. Subsequently, he joined the Bahujan Samaj Party and contested the 2012 elections from Kasganj. However, he failed miserably to make an impact. In 2014, he contested from Mainpur constituency (as a Bahujan Samaj Party member) but lost to Mulayam Singh Yadav. In 2016, Maurya resigned from the Bahujan Samaj Party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. Sanghmitra, within a year of joining the BJP, was asked to contest the elections from Padraun constituency. However, he refused to do so. He led BJP’s Parivartan Yatra in five districts.

Maurya also played a role in the BJP’s women’s cell. In 2019, Sangmitra contested the Indian general election from Badaun constituency on a BJP ticket, defeating senior Samajwadi Party leader Dharmendra Yadav (nephew of Mulayam Singh Yadav). He is a member of the 17th Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Parliament of India. In July 2019, he became a member of the Other Backward Classes Welfare Committee. In September 2019, he was elected as a member of the Standing Committee and Advisory Committee on Health and Family Welfare, Ministry of Rural Development, Ministry of Panchayati Raj.
