His father, Chaudhary Charan Singh, was a prominent farmer leader who became the 5th Prime Minister of India. Ajith’s mother, Gayatri Devi, was a Member of Legislative Assembly from Iglas (1974), District Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. After that, he became a member of the lower house of parliament from Kairana constituency in 1980. Ajith was the only son among six children of his parents. His sisters’ names are Satyavati, Vedvati, Gyanvati, Saroj and Sharda.

Ajit Singh completed his B.tech in Computer Science from IIT Kharagpur. He later went abroad for further studies. He received his master’s degree in computer engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. After graduation, he joined IBM as a computer scientist and became one of the first Indians to work there in the 1960s. He worked there for almost 17 years.

Ajit Singh returned to India when his father’s health failed. The party founded by Lok Dal Ch. Charan Singh was on the fringes of the faction in the early 1980s. Ajit Singh had returned from America at that time to continue the family legacy in farming politics. He started his foot in politics in 1986 when he joined Lok Dal as its General Secretary. In the same year, he became a member of the upper house of the parliament. After a prolonged illness, his father died in 1987, but before his death he appointed Ajit Singh as the party president and Hemwati Nandan Baguguna as acting president. This arrangement failed to satisfy the party members and began to decline and in 1987 Lok Dal split into two factions, Lok Dal (A) led by Ajit Singh and Lok Dal (B) led by Hemwati Nandan Baguguna.

In 1988, Ajith decided to merge the Lok Dal with the Janata Dal and became the president of the newly formed Janata Party. The merger angered many party members, after which Ajith faced a backlash during the 1989 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections. Janata Party won this election. VP Singh suggested that Ajit Singh CM and Mulayam Singh Yadav be made Deputy CMs, but Mulayam rejected it and suggested a vote to decide the winning party leader. Mulayam Singh got 115 votes and Ajith got 110 votes. This vote margin prevented Ajit from becoming the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Later, he became a member of the Lower House of Parliament and VP Singh made him Minister of Industries in his cabinet; He served the ministry from 1989 to 1990.

Ajit Singh is known for key initiatives to help cane farmers in western Uttar Pradesh and he once proposed reducing the circle distance between sugar mills from 25 km to 15 km. From 1989 to 2009, he won 6 times in general elections of Baghpat district and was Minister of Industry, Food, Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Civil Aviation.
Throughout his political career, Ajit Singh has been instrumental in forming coalition governments in alliance with various parties. He once spoke about the coalition government and said:
“First, the alliance is based on policies. हम अन्य जाटी, धर्म, भाषा की कृके कृष्ट के विश्वार कर है है अविसे लोकतन्त्र के अधिक नहीं हो पाता है.”

He has lost general elections only twice, first in 1998 and second in 2014, both times to a BJP candidate. After his defeat in 1998, he founded his new party Rashtriya Lok Dal in 1999. This decision paid off and he won the Baghpat seat again and joined Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s coalition government serving as the Agriculture Cabinet Minister. It introduced a credit-linked subsidy scheme to increase cold storage capacity, which increased the flow of investment.

Verbal attack on PM Modi
In his later years of active politics, he made headlines for his verbal attacks on Narendra Modi. In 2019, he launched a verbal attack on Narendra Modi, saying:
“Yeh jhot nahi bolta… bas isne aj tak sach nahi bola… bachon ko kehte hain sach bola kar, lekin iske ma baap ne nahi sikhaya… mahilaon ka pashdhar hai, thinein talak thine talak… apni patni ko ek baar bhi talak nahi bola.“
“Yeh bhaiya itna hoshiar aur shatir admi hai, agari yeh sri lanka chala jaata na, laut ke kehta ravan ko maine ha maara. Kyonki desh mein aur kisi ne toh kuch kiya hi nahi“

Facts/Trivia
- While serving as Industries Minister, Ajit Singh drafted the bill with Amar Nath Verma (Secretary, Ministry of Industries). This bill was designed to reduce the license raj, but the other parties in the coalition did not support it and it went to the ballot box. Later, the same bill was passed by Narasimha Rao in 1991 to introduce liberalization in the Indian economy.
