Hekani Jakhalu is an Indian lawyer, social activist and politician who contested the 2023 Nagaland Assembly elections. She made headlines in 2023 after she became the first woman elected Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Nagaland along with Salhutuonuo Kruse.

Hekani Jakhalu Kense was born in 1975 (age 48; as of 2023) in Toluvi, Dimapur, Nagaland. She attended Holy Cross Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, after which she studied at Bishop Cotton Girls’ School in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Later, she joined Lady Sri Ram College for Women in New Delhi, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. In 2002, he received a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies from American University. In 2008, he entered Harvard University in the USA, where he received executive education. He later obtained his BA in Law from the University of Delhi. He then earned a degree in executive education from American University. He later enrolled at the University of San Francisco, where he earned a master’s degree in law. Later, she worked as an intern at the United Nations (UN) Committee on the Status of Women.

Lawyer

After completing his formal education, he started practicing law in New Delhi. Later, he established a law firm in Delhi advising his clients in the field of civil and corporate law. However, he left the firm in 2005. As an advocate, he represented his clients in the Delhi High Court as well as the Supreme Court. Until 2005, he worked as an advocate in the Delhi High Court.

Hekani Jakhalu joined the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) after he left his advocacy in New Delhi and returned to Nagaland. He contested the 2023 Nagaland Assembly elections from Dimapur Constituency III on an NDPP ticket.

In the elections, she defeated Lok Janshakti (Ram Villa) candidate Ajeto Zimmom by 1,536 votes and became the first woman to enter the Nagaland State Assembly. In an interview, he said:

I won because people wanted change. I have been in social work for more than 17 years. All this time I worked with young people. I will work on minorities (read for non-tribal communities). They make up more than half of the population of the district.”

Social activism

In 2002, Hekani began working with Amnesty International in San Francisco. He worked there until 2003. In 2006, Hekani Jakhalu left his practice as a lawyer in New Delhi and moved to Dimapur, where he founded YouthNet, a non-profit organization. After this, the NGO established several job centers in Nagaland to employ the people of the Northeast based on their educational qualifications. The NGO has tie-ups with global organizations such as JW Marriott Hotel and Pullman Hotels and Resorts. Later the NGO started providing vocational courses to the youth at a very low cost. In an interview, he said:

We give them an orientation for a week and explain them about the sector. Also, we keep in touch with them, especially the first time travelers. We have a mechanism by which we track them and take care of the youth’s safety and accommodation for a year.”

In September 2008, he became the chairman of Young Indians and remained in this position until September 2010. In 2013, to promote young entrepreneurs, YouthNet started an event called “Entrepreneur”, in which many aspiring professionals present their ideas.

In an interview, Hekani Jakhalu said that he decided to start his NGO in Nagaland after seeing a large number of youths from the northeastern parts of India working in New Delhi, away from their hometowns. Speaking about this, he said:

In every shop in every mall you could see young guys and girls working from the Northeast. I wondered what drew young people from the Northeast to the metro. Was it out of choice or coercion? Also, since most were from small villages, these cities were not safe, expensive to live in, and culturally different.”

In 2018, to promote local products from Nagaland, YouthNet established Made In Nagaland, a hub where manufacturers sell their products to consumers.
