Rajeshwari Gayakwad is an Indian cricketer who plays as a slow left-arm orthodox bowler for the national team. He has represented Karnataka, Railways, Trailblazers and Supernovas in domestic cricket. It was bought by the franchise team UP Warriorz for the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) season in 2023.

Rajeshwari Shivanand Gayakwad was born on Saturday, June 1, 1991 (age 32 years; as of 2023) in Bijapur, Karnataka. His zodiac sign is Gemini. Rajeshwar belongs to a musically inclined family. His grandfather was a musician. Before he and his siblings started playing sports professionally, they were all musicians. Rajeshwari and his sisters sang while his brothers and father played various musical instruments. On weekends, his father taught all his children music lessons. However, he was an athlete since childhood and played javelin and discus, khoh-khoh and volleyball during his school days. He later developed a passion for cricket, playing cricket with his father and brothers. At the age of 16, she joined the Bijapur Women’s Cricket Club along with her sister Rameshwari Gayakwad after her father, a sports enthusiast, heard that the club was conducting a free training camp for girls. However, coming from a humble background, Rajeshwar faced a lot of difficulties early in his cricketing journey. In an interview, he spoke about the same and said:

I am from a poor family. My father was a teacher in a government primary school. When I was selected for the Karnataka team, I did not have white pants and a white shirt. My father bought a pair of second-hand trousers and had them altered. I managed to wear my school white shirt instead of a white t-shirt. When I remember those days of struggle, I must cry, tears come automatically. I faced a lot of financial problems.”

At the club, her sporting talent was recognized by Basavaraj Ijeri, the head of the Bijapur Women’s Cricket Club. Apart from Basavaraj Ijeri, Rajeshwari has received coaching from Ashok Jadhav, Salem TT, Sridhar Joshi, Kalal and AG Patel at the club. He was a fast bowler in his early years; However, Gayakwad switched to spin when his coach Ashok Jadhav insisted that he lacked the strength and height to be a fast bowler. He made it to the Karnataka state team after just two months of formal training. After being selected for the state team, he received coaching from Kalpana Venkatacharya, Shantha Rangswamy and Gayathri. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts. His father died of cardiac arrest in 2014 after his debut international series against Sri Lanka. After that he became the sole breadwinner of his family. Following his father to support the family, he joined the Indian Railways and was selected in its cricket team in 2015, after which he started living in Bengaluru. Later, he was posted in Western Railway (WR) after which he started living in WR Quarters in Matunga, Mumbai.

He represented Karnataka and Indian Railways in domestic cricket. In the Women’s T20 Challenge (2018), the inaugural edition, Gayakwad starred for the IPL Supernovas, who won the match by 3 wickets. She was named in the IPL Trailblazers squad for the 2020 Women’s T20 Challenge, which went on to become champions of the tournament, defeating the IPL Supernovas by 16 runs in the final. In the 2022 season of the Women’s T20 Challenge, she again played for the IPL Trailblazers.

In the 2021–22 Senior Women’s Challenger Cup, she played for India D, which lost to India A in the final. He was the third highest wicket taker in the tournament with 7 dismissals. In May 2022, she was part of the Railways team that defeated Maharashtra by seven wickets to win the BCCI Women’s T-20 (2021–2022). In the 2022–23 Women’s Senior T20 Challenger Trophy, she played for India D, who emerged as champions, defeating India A by 7 wickets.

He made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka at the Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam on 19 January 2014. On 25 January 2014, he made his T20 debut against Sri Lanka at Dr PVG Raju ACA Sports Complex, Viziur3 from S10. On 16 November 2014, she made her Test debut against South Africa at the Gangothri Glades Cricket Ground, Mysore during the South Africa Women’s tour of India in 2014/15. She was named in the Indian squad for the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup. Rajeshwar’s match-winning 5/15 helped India beat New Zealand and book a place in the semi-finals at the World Cup; Her figures were India’s best in Women’s Cricket World Cup history. She was named in the Indian squad for the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, the 2022 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup and the cricket tournament at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
