Career
Sukhjinder grew up in a political environment as his father was a prominent Congress leader from Punjab. He developed an interest in politics as a teenager and joined the Indian Youth Congress party while in college. His first victory came in the 2002 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections when he contested for the MLA seat from Fatehgarh Churian, Gurdaspur, Punjab. He contested again for the same seat in the 2007 assembly elections in Punjab but failed to win. He then contested for the MLA seat from Dera Baba Nanak, Gurdaspur, Punjab and won in the 2012 Punjab Assembly elections. He campaigned in 2015 for Captain Amarind Singh to become the Punjab Congress President, replacing the then Punjab Congress President Pratap Bajwa.
Sukhjinder, along with 42 other Congress MPs, resigned in 2016 in protest. They were opposing the decision of the Supreme Court of India on the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) water canal. The decision of the Supreme Court of India on this issue was,
Punjab has no right to unilaterally terminate water sharing agreements with neighboring states.
Sukhjinder then contested the 2017 Punjab Assembly election as MLA from Dera Baba Nanak, Gurdaspur, Punjab and won the seat for the second time. Sukhjinder was contested by his elder brother Inderjit Singh Randhawa in the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections. Later, after losing the elections, Inderjit Singh Randhawa and his son Dipinder Singh Randhawa joined the Shiromani Akali Dal and quit the Congress. In the same year, in the Punjab government under Captain Amarind Singh, he was appointed as the Cabinet Minister for Cooperation and Prisons. In August 2017, Sukhjinder and 32 other Congress members wrote a letter to the then chief minister, Captain Amarind Singh, asking for an inquiry into the drug case against Shiromani Akali Dal minister Bikram Singh Majithia. Due to the lack of strict action against the Akalis, a rift broke out between Captain Amarinder Singh and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa. Sukhjinder is popular for being one of the leaders of the “Majha Brigade” of the Congress from Punjab, including Tript Rajinder Bajwa and Sukhvinder Singh Sukh.
On June 17, 2021, his petition to get special security from the central government was rejected by the Union Home Ministry. According to the relevant ministry, his life is not in danger, so he does not need special protection. After the sudden resignation of former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarind Singh in 2021, Sukhinder was one of the first names for the CM seat. Later, Congress party finalized Charanjit Singh Chan’s name for CM. Om Prakash Soni and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa have been appointed as Deputy Chief Ministers of Punjab. The swearing-in ceremony was held on 20 September 2021 at Raj Bhavan, Chandigarh.
Some of the other positions he has served in his tenure are:
- Vice President of Punjab Youth Congress
- President of the Primary Agricultural Service Society
- Daroval Privileges Committee Chairman
- Member of the Public Enterprises Committee of the SSC, Library
- Member, Committee on Estimates, Vidhan Sabha, Punjab
confrontations
- Tiff with Naviot Singh Sidhu
In October 2020, he took to the podium to stop Navjot Singh Sidhu when he was addressing him for the first time since resigning from the Punjab cabinet. During the ‘Save Agriculture’ Mission rally, Sidhu launched an attack on then Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh in his speech in the presence of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Interrupted by Randhawa, Sidhu said:
Don’t stop bhaji aj, ke rakhya tus sit a lot”.
Which means “Please don’t stop me today, I’ve been sitting a lot”.
- Accusation of disrespecting the Sikh Guru
He got into a huge controversy when one of his old videos went viral in 2019. In the video, he is seen saying:
Hun a dekho na guru nanak sahib a ae fauji bana dita a… doro dekho ta captain sahib nahi lagde”.
Which means “Now see this Guru Nanak Sahib is made a soldier…not like a captain”.
Opposition leaders were outraged by his remarks and considered it an insult to the Sikh Guru and the Sikh community. They demanded strict action against Randhawa for this statement.
- Disagreement between Captain Amarinder Singh and Sukhjindr Singh Randhawa
His relationship with Captain Amarind Singh, one of the political leaders closest to him, took a hit when the cleric, suspended by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, cleared the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up in the Kotkapura shootings led by Kunwar Vijay Pratap in April 2021. Dhawa so much so that Randhawa signed his resignation on the spot and the captain tore up his (Randhawa’s) resignation. Later, Randhawa raised many questions about the performance of Punjab Advocate General Atul Nanda, which did not go down well with the captain.
- Allegations of his CA defense in a fraud case
His assistant was found guilty in the fraud case for supplying sugar worth 500 GEL. 74 lakhs and paying only Rs. 57 GEL from this. Randhawa was charged with protecting his CA from government crackdowns. “Shiromani Akali Dal” leaders said while talking to journalists.
The high court also asked the government to explain why the counsel for the minister, who has been named as the mastermind behind the scam, has not been arrested. Days have passed since the fraud case came to light, as did the revelation that Mr. Sukhjinder Randhawa’s PA was using the minister’s office to seal such deals. It is clear that the Minister is protecting his PA to ensure that the skeletons of the former’s wardrobes do not fall. A free and fair investigation will not be possible as long as Randhawa remains in office. “
