In 2006, he joined the Scotland squad for the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka. Berrington progressed through the Scotland A team and made his ODI debut on 2 July 2008 against Ireland in Aberdeen. During the match against Ireland, he played an important role by scoring the victory. He made his T20 debut on 2 August 2008 against Ireland in Belfast. He has established a permanent place in the Scotland team with his outstanding performances in both Twenty20 and first-class cricket. As a result, he was selected as part of their squad for the 2009 ICC World Twenty20. He was initially on a contract that ran from April to September 2009, but later in March 2010, he became the sixth Scottish cricketer to be offered a full-time contract with Cricket Scotland. Berrington has scored centuries in crucial matches for Scotland, but his performance has not always been consistent, leading to frustration. In a match against India A in June 2010, he showed excellent batting ability with 106 runs. His extraordinary performance played a crucial role in helping Scotland bounce back from a difficult situation with 7/64 to successfully chase down the target of 277 runs in the game. In July 2011, he played a superb innings in a one-day international (ODI), scoring 56 runs from just 23 balls, which was instrumental in Scotland’s most successful run chase. Scotland captain Preston Momsen later described the innings as one of his most memorable performances. On 24 July 2012, he scored an impressive 100 runs off just 56 balls in a Twenty20 International match against Bangladesh. His outstanding performance helped Scotland win by 34 runs. The century made him the seventh cricketer to score a century in Twenty20 Internationals and the first from an Associate nation. In addition, his exceptional performance saw Scotland achieve their first win against a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC). No other Scottish batsman scored more than 19 runs in the match. In September 2014, he scored his maiden century in One Day Internationals (ODIs) against Ireland. Despite the match ending in defeat for Scotland, his outstanding performance earned him a place in the 2015 Cricket World Cup squad. In the 2015 World Cup, during Scotland’s first match against New Zealand, he played a crucial role with a 50-run partnership with Matt Machan, who also scored a half-century. However, their partnership was the only one that mattered and Scotland were eventually dismissed for 142 runs. New Zealand comfortably chased down the target with plenty of overs to spare. His highest score during the World Cup was 50 runs.

In January 2017, Berrington and Callum McLeod created history by setting a new record in T20I matches. They formed a remarkable partnership of 127 runs during the game against Hong Kong. This partnership became the highest T20I partnership for Scotland. Berrington’s traditional batting style perfectly complemented McLeod’s unique and unorthodox batting, which played an important role in their successful partnership. In June 2017, he scored a personal best of 110 runs against Namibia.

In January 2018, he captained the Scotland cricket team for the 2017–18 UAE Tri-Nation Series. It was his first time leading the team in international matches. He took over the captaincy as regular captain Kyle Kotzer was unavailable for the first two matches as he was busy completing his coaching qualification. In the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier, he played for Scotland and made a significant contribution. In their first match against Afghanistan, he scored a half-century and was instrumental in creating a national record by forming a 208-run partnership with Callum McLeod for the third wicket. Moreover, he scored 47 runs in an exciting match against Zimbabwe. In Scotland’s crucial 2019 Cricket World Cup qualification match against the West Indies, Berrington faced a controversial dismissal. The umpire ruled him out for leg in front of the wicket, but replays showed the ball hit him outside the stumps line, meaning he should not have been run. Unfortunately, as the tournament did not use the Umpire Decision Review System to save costs, Scotland were unable to challenge the decision. As a result, Scotland lost the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern match by just four runs. In June 2019, he was selected to play for the Edmonton Royals franchise team in the 2019 Global T20 Canada tournament. In the same month, Berrington was selected as a member of the Glasgow Giants squad for the inaugural Euro T20 Slam cricket tournament. Unfortunately, the tournament was canceled in July.
