Badruddin Ajmal was born in Ali Nagar village located in Hojai district of Assam. His full name is Badruddin Ajmal Qasmi. There is confusion regarding the official date of his birth. According to one source, he was born on Sunday, February 12, 1950 (age 70; as of 2020); However, according to another source, his year of birth is 1956 (age 66 as of 2020). Ajmal completed his Fazil-e Deoband (equivalent Masters degree in Islamic Theology and Arabic) from Darul Uloom Deoband, UP and joined his family business in 1975.

Career

as a politician

In 2005, he formed a political party called the Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF), which was later renamed the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) before the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. In 2006, he was elected as a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly simultaneously from two constituencies – South Salmara and Jamunamukh. In total, his party managed to win 10 seats in the first elections. It was a big breakthrough for Badruddin Ajmal who was not even recognized by the then Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi before the elections. Then in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, Badruddin Ajmal won from the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat, defeating the incumbent INC MP Anowar Hussain.

  • He is the president of Markazul Ma’arif, a non-governmental organization that runs schools, hospitals, orphanages with the sole motto of striving to uplift the economically and educationally deprived section of society. In addition, the NGO promotes many other social, educational and economic development activities in various parts of India. Since its inception in 1982, the organization has done tremendous work for the people in the areas of poverty, illiteracy and basic immunization, especially in Assam and other North Eastern states.
  • He is the Managing Trustee of Haji Abdul Majid Memorial Public Trust, Hojai. The trust is best known for building the Haji Abdul Majid Memorial Hospital and Research Center in Hojai, Assam.
  • He is also the head of Jamiat Ulama-e-Assam of Assam and Tanzim Madaris-e Quamia – the All Assam Non-Government Madrasah Council, which prepares the syllabus and conducts examinations for over 400 madrasas in the state. He is also associated with a number of other schools, madrassas and orphanages as chairman or secretary in various parts of North East India.
  • He is the Chairman of the Markazul Maarif Education and Research Center (MMERC), Mumbai – an institution that caters to the modern needs of madrasa graduates by teaching English and also promotes research work in socio-religious and economic fields. In 2006, the Ajmal family came up with another noble idea and promoted women’s higher education in Assam through the ‘Mariam Ajmal College of Science and Technology for Women’ at Hojai.   • In October 2019, Badruddin Ajmal courted controversy when he bluntly rejected Assam’s two-child policy. She said,

    Muslims will continue to have children, they will not listen to anyone. Our religion and I personally believe that whoever wants to come into the world and no one can stop him.

  • In November 2020, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal faced public scorn when several members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released a video claiming that people were raising “Pakistan Zindabad” slogans when they met Badruddin at Silchar Airport. The AIUDF held a press conference on the same day and refuted the claims that it was an attempt by the BJP, along with some media channels, to malign the AIUDF by distorting the actual slogan of ‘Aziz Khan Zindabad’ into ‘Pakistan Zindabad’.

  • In December 2020, Satya Ranjan Borah, a member of the BJP, filed an FIR against Badruddin’s Ajmal Foundation, a public charity, alleging that the organization received funds from foreign agencies with links to terrorist companies. The complaint is based on a report by the Legal Rights Observatory (LRO), a legal rights organization linked to the Hindu nationalist organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Speaking to a media correspondent, Badruddin Ajmal denied the allegations leveled against Ajmal’s foundation and also denied receiving funds from a foreign agency linked to terrorists. He said the FIR filed against him is part of a political conspiracy hatched by the leader of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party in Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, to discredit him, his party (AIUDF) and the Ajmal Foundation. He also demanded a probe at the highest level to reveal the truth.
